my 2009 250r has just clock over its 1000 grand of kz... im keen to try the service myself, so i can learn more about my bike, im just wondering what i need to do and how?

Basic service is easy, just oil and filter and maybe plugs and coolant if you can be bothered

sweet as the manual isn't bad when it comes to showing the how to.. have you got any recommendations for filters and plugs?

Original or K&N, as for plugs, I don't have a clue

cheers man.. yeah i have been doing a little research on filters k&r seems to be the weapon of choice... just trying to suss it all out have no idea about this stuff only been into it for a couple of months but keen to learn the best and efficient way to run my bike...

if its still under warranty you need it done by a proper mechanic to keep the warranty.

If you get a K/N filter get the cleaning kit for it at the same time ,you can save money with these filters ,as for the plugs the hand book will tell you which one.

I have been told that this is not strictly correct, the only issue is that if you have a warranty claim they will try to jib you and the onus is on you to prove that the fault did not arise from work that was or wasn't done - ie that the fault was a genuine problem which would not have been avoided had a licenced mechanic serviced the bike. Guess the only problem is that not being a licenced mechanic, what expertise do you have to proove this!?

At the 1000km service isnt there a whole checklist of tightening and checking this n that in order to find any faults or warrantable items hence the need for a licenced mechanic to do the service (oil change)? I guess I could be wrong on that but on a new bike Id rather spend a couple of hundred bucks than have an issue later and be spening dollars on lawyers!

If the service is not carried out by a lisenced mechanic it could also impact on any insurance claim. I know it is unlike insurance companies to try to find any reason not to pay out, but if you have an accident that is related to something that should have been carried out during a service but wasn't the insurance company wold just laugh at you if they found this out.

If this was the case none of us would be doing our own servicing out of fear of not being paid out in an insurance claim.

At the 1000km service there's no reason to do coolant or plugs - the bike's only just been born. Oil, filter and check tighten bolts.

In your case I'd be getting a mechanic to do the first service, do the 2nd one yourself (with the help of an experienced friend/club member etc if you're not confident) and do it in half the recommended period. The money you'll save on mechanics will pay for your oil and filter twice over.
