International money transfers

Does anyone know a cheap(er) way to do international money transfers?
Im getting boned with a $30 fee for a 30$ item.
I might ask if the seller has paypal

There is also a fee with paypal, the recipient of the monies transferred pays a fee; not sure what the current percentage is now but before it was like 3% before.
What country are you sending monies too?
I have a local and a USA savings account which are both with HSBC,
AUD to USD no charge
USD to USD no charge (savings/cheque account transfers)
USD back to AUD is now 3%, used to be 1.5% !

Im sending to germany. two transactions. one is for $40 AUD and the other is for 82$ AUD.
My bank and my girlfriends bank both charge $30 per transaction.

They may have the same set up scenario as HSBC.

I use paypal to transfer and if you use the gift option you can chose to pay the fee.
I transferred £700 across the other week and paid £3.50 in fees.

That was what i was going to say, send it as a gift and front the paypal fee's yourself. That is the big pita with peoples enthusiasm of paypal, esp its tie-ins with ebay. You are forced to use it and swallow any/all fee's if the buyer uses it in its default method. It's convenient but has costs if you use it nationally, but is the cheapest option if you send it internationally. Western Union has a flat rate, which when i last used it was $20, which frankly does sting a little.
