Have you ever noticed how an IDE cable does not fit into a SATA HDD?

So the long version goes something like this.............

PC has been playing up recently; slow, crashing etc. Turns out one of the HDDs was full and it fell over every time the auto back up tried to run.
2.8 Ghz P4, about 7 years old. 1Gb ram, 1x 120Gb Hdd, 1 x 160Gb Hdd (it was expensive 7 years ago).

So I Ebay'd a few new bits. 2Tb Hdd and an additional 2Gb Ram. RAM not yet arrived, HDD arrived yesterday. Turns out I ordered a SATA drive, and the old motherboard is IDE, so data cable and power cable do not fit!!!

Luckilly I've found an IDE/SATA adaptor and cable.

I cleaned the cooling fans out while I had the cover off, it's way quieter now.

It would have been easier to buy a new PC.

Just a minor technical detail, i'm sure if you push hard enough it'll fit, but just don't expect it to work very well afterwards.

It's always easier to build a brand newy.......
but where's the chalenge in that?

I'm assuming it's also the now very expensive DDR1 Ram?

Steve gives me an old video card to replace my old video card.... gone are the days of me having multiple state-of-the-art computer systems... kids will do that! So anyway, Steve gives me a video card. A couple of years ago it would have been a $700 video card. You can buy one today for less than $130 that will outperform it!! Regardless, it's faster than my current card.

I slap it in to my system, plug in the two power cables (yes, power cables on a bloody GPU!), and...... nothing. Nadda. Zip.

Hmmm.

New card out, old card in. Jump online and find out that there's a conflict between the graphics card and the chipset on my motherboard. So I cruise on over to the ASUS website and find out that there's a BIOS update that *might* fix it. I download the new BIOS and the BIOS updating software. Of course the updating software doesn't run on Windows 7 64-bit. Grrr.

OK, easy fix. I create a self booting DOS CD, with the update software on it, and get the BIOS sorted. Plug in the new card and...... nothing. AGAIN!

*sigh*

Out with the new card, in with the old. AGAIN! An hour of research later and I find that the card needs a power supply with at least 26 amps on the 12 volt rail. Either all on one rail, or split across two. How many amps does my power supply have? 16.....

So now I have to upgrade my power supply.

The fun never ends.

Yeah, but it doesn't fit may aging motherboard.

My motherboard will not recognise high density Ram and will not run faster that 333Mhz memory (it's all down to the bus speed). But now with 2Tb or starage and 3Gb ram it will do everything I need.

I may upgarde machine when I learn guitar well enough to want to record something, but for now I wouldn't want to preserve the noise.

When I do upgrade, I will build a machine dependant on my requirements; it will be great sound and reasonable graphics. I don't game on my PC, so see no need to top notch graphics (just enough for Photeshop).

I can't resist the urge to post in a geek thread...

A cheap graphics card with 1gb ddr5 is enough for PhotoShop ($120- $160) spend the big bucks on dual xeon processors and 12gb RAM running a 64bit OS. Playing with 60mb raw image files is like child's play on that system

Add to that a couple of decent size solid state drives and a very high end sound card and that's along the lines I'll be looking at. Might not be able to resist a Midi controler and a little mixing desk
