Today I was boldly dismissed by a potential employer because I do not have a car as mode of transport.

Composing myself, I calmly called and questioned the decision. Not only did I disperse all concerns, I convinced the employer that riding actually assists me build an instant rapport with the youth and young kids I work with. They are now every eager to meet me.

I’m a bit jack of having to defend my choice of transport in this day and age.

Have you ever been disadvantaged or treated differently because you ride?

never been disadvantaged as such, but definately people treat you different when you rock up to work everyday in leathers.

speaking of which, did you repaint your bike? theres been a bright green one parked out the front of my work for the last two days... except it's got an akra single side exhaust, not you by any chance?

Im out of town atm, back Sunday... No repaint she just needs a bath ..My zed is a 1000, im pretty sure that one is 750 and resides in sebas..

Possum, if the ad doesn't stipulate you HAVE to have a car for the job, then I reckon they could go a row of shithouses for discrimination.

I really dislike cars and find them usefull for towing motorbikes to race tracks only.....
They prolly wanted you to lug stuff around for them, like coffees and stuff. What good is a car? it sits in the car park at work for 8hrs doing nothing but taking up space and getting dings from other cars opening their doors on it. This situation concerns me too as I have declined into respectability of late with the completion of a uni degree and now im looking at jobs that say 'car license' and im wondering if a bike will do too? if I have to get a car it will be a van with room for two bikes.....

Oddly enough my CEO dropped into my office on wednesday for a welcome me back to work chat and one of the things he said was that I should stop riding motorcycles. I told him that this job is the best job I have ever had and am finding it a real mental challenge, but I would quit in a heartbeat if the choice had to be made between job and bikes. I told him I can make money doing almost anything I want, but I can't give up riding unless I am not physically able. He got my message loud and clear.

I have been discriminated at motels and restaurants being in bike gear. The Hyatt valet parkers got rather confused when I pulled in on the bike. the reception staff looked down their noses at me and the porters ignored me. Which was great, as when I came back down in the morning dressed in my suit and they were all over me, i ignored them!

Mick the only thing it stipulated was i have a current full drivers licence. I failed to use the term discrimination, but met all their criteria. Refusal was not an option.

I don’t mind bush bashing in a 4x4 and yeah towing.. but that’s about it..

What they want is for staff to lug around clients so they can save on expenses, but their claims far out weight the savings...
Company vehicles are the go. Clients are A. less likely to damage B. covers all insurance issues and C. they write the whole thing off and the cost is absorbed into the care of the client.. Win Win in my eyes..

Depends are they paying a car allowance to cover your expenses? If they are then not really being descriminated against (unless I am reading this wrong)

Company cars are a PITA for the company especially when there is a lack of kilometres as FBT becomes expensive and some people treat company cars like rental cars.

They should convert them all too bikes then. From memory, unless it's changed, bikes were FBT exempt!!!

I looked into it as my company gives me cash for a car and I wanted to include the bike, but I can only have one vehicle, blah blah bloody ATO

bikes have NEVER been FBT exempt...sorry another urban myth that one

they are treated the same way as all other benefits paid for ..except they miss out on the concessions given to cars under the FBT act
bikes are treated the same way as school fees or entertainment, they cop FBT at 100% of the cost paid for them
