Easter in Adelaide?

So almost 4 and a half years ago, wife and I moved to Australia. Never seen anywhere or lived anywhere else except Melbourne. Best mate of mine and his girlfriend (also from India) have also been in Melbourne for about the same time.
In recent times, discussions about quality of life emerged and some people at my work suggested Adelaide as a nice (a bit boring) city to live in. Quieter, smaller and good towns surrounding adelaide.
In parallel I did not know my best friend and his gf also considered moving to Adelaide at one point in time last year. Last week when I caught up with them, I shared my thoughts about living in a quietier, smaller city and VOILA. All of a sudden we both were considering moving out of Melbourne?
My bestie and I grew up in smallish cities and love the feeling as always. So one thing led to another, and all of a sudden we started considering moving to Adelaide
But there are concerns. Obviously Melbourne means I make top dollar, so does the wife. Adelaide market is smaller and might mean a slight paycut. My mate also is looking at jobs and comparing pay rates. Whilst that is happening in parallel. The 4 of us (my best mate, his gf, my wife and I) are doing a road trip to Adelaide to check out the city, its surroundings during the easter break. We hope to see some nice people and places.
It might not mean anything and we may not end up moving or anything after all. Lots to consider and weigh up.
But I thought of this forum and the vibrant Adelaide Kawasaki community I have come to know on this forum, so I thought I'd share my thoughts with the gang

IMHO, the best opinions you'll get are from those that have lived elsewhere and moved here.
Having said that, I'd be happy if everyone left and no one came in their place.

Life is what you make it...

Your fiscal concerns.. my industry is on par. I am led to believe the cost of living is a little higher, but hey the way Melbourne is going with utilities and bloody traffic infringements...arrr... bring on Ade
What you have to weigh up is quality of life.. this is the main reason im moving.. yes everyone needs money and everyone’s circumstances are different, but for me, i have simple needs

Cant guarantee "Nice" people, can guarantee awesome, slightly dysfunctional Green people.. Ooo and dont forget the chocolate shop, cheese place, wineries..etc

Not according to Mercer Global. As of 2010 they state:
Sydney is Australia’s most expensive city followed by Melbourne) and Brisbane while Adelaide is the country’s least expensive city.
And according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (
http://www.eiu.com/public/) they state that as of 2009 statistics show that it costs 24% more to live in Sydney, 21% more in Melbourne, 12% more in Perth and 8% more in Brisbane compared to living in Adelaide.

I have had to travel with my job, having postings to Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne. Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne I have lived in twice. Of all the places I have lived, Melbourne is my preference. Adelaide is a beautiful city and despite people who knock it (often never having lived there) I liked living in Adelaide both times.
It's easy to get around, housing is more affordable, the Adelaide hills are motorcycling heaven and once you work out where things are on what nights it's social scene is good too. The weather is warmer and drier than Melbourne also. But, living there for 3 years, I got bored riding the same roads all the time and once you venture a few hundred klms from Adelaide, the roads straighten out quickly.
Even with all it's positives, I still prefer Melbourne. But your young, why not give it a shot. One thing, if you did go, hang on to the 250. It would be a weapon in the hills.

Marty, after Melbourne, would Adelaide be your next best city to live in? And are the twisties and good riding roads much lesser compared to melbourne?
Can anyone recommend nice suburbs to live in Adelaide so I can research some house prices/ rent et. al? Nice to haves include, proximity to freeways, beaches? etc. Should not be more than 40 kms from the CBD
