Rear fender...

As most will know a few of us have been busted with either fender eliminators or cut down fenders. My honest question is;
What purpose does the stock fender serve, aside from complying with ADR?
I see no benefits as a mud guard and it certainly won't provide any crash protection. I can't even see any visibity benefits or other safety reasons.

Don't be stupid!!
We all know it's to stop manhole covers from coming up and killing the cars following us.

It appears to me they made the rule so designs would be as ugly and useless as possible, simply so we would remove them and then get fined.

Yeah good point the underneath of my tail and taillight are trashed from all the stones smashing into them. but i would rather that then the wheelie bar that they come with stock.

I was on the ride with Mike. My fender on the ZRX is cut off level with the bottom of the number plate and the same cop that pinged Mike & Mal didn't have any issue with mine.
I think from memory, Mal's fender was cut off only about another 30mm shorter than mine, but was extended to about the same level as mine by virtue of the number plate occupying the same space as the missing bit of plastic. It's still offering the same level of protection and fenders aren't normally wider than the number plate anyway.

Pretty much none on bikes these days, particularly the new sportsbikes where they're just long enough to cover ADRs and sturdy enough to hold a reflector at the prescribed point.
My KR250 has a super long black plastic jobbie that's the full width of the tyre, which I imagine would actually do something.
My guess is that most modern manufacturers know that people will either race or fender eliminate a new 600/1000 sports bike so they want to make them as cheap to manufacture as possible (smart business).
It's all about what the road rules say you have to have when you buy it.
Similarly when I was rallying there were rules about mudflaps that had to be full width of the rear tyres. Didn't take long for at least one team to exploit the rule...
