R Class License with Green P Car License. Can i ride a 9?

Hello guys and girls, i have a tricky question.

I will get my R's in just over a month (QLD). However, i am also on my green P's for a car. I have also bought my ZX-9R (definitely not LAMS). The way i read it is that if i get my R class license, i can ride any bike i like, but still can't drive any car i would like. Or is this not the case?

According to the definitions on the QLD Transport, a ZX-9R is not a high performance vehicle.

I just keep hearing cases of "yes, you can ride the bike on your R's" and "No way, that's fully illegal", and would like to get a clear view.

If this is in the wrong section, please move it :)

Thanks,

Lachlan

You have one license, but two riding classes. In the R class you have no restrictions with what you can ride, as long as it has the requisite classification of motorcycle. Your Car license classification is subject to whatever restrictions someone with only their green P's would be subject to.

I.e. i had my car license for 7 years, went out and got my bike L's and would have gotten in all kinds of shit had i gone out and ridden a ZX9 when i was still subject to the Learner or provisional restrictions within my license in its "motorcycle class". The points subtraction thing is something that can get confusing, but one thing that is clear is if you get suspended, you can't do either as you have only one "license".

As above.

I can ride whatever I like, but It's illegal for me to drive without supervision. :P I hate driving...

Car licencing and bike licencing issues are separate. Your car restrictions will last until you go to opens. You will be able to ride a ZX9r once you have your R licence. If you have to wear P plates on your car, you will also on the bike. BTW I am a Q-Ride Instructor and Registered Service Provider. :)

Bonester,

So in regards to showing p/l-plates you are bound by the "lowest" proficiency of all classes on your licence?

So the "R" bike license lets him ride the ZX9r but with P plates showing?

Will that mean he's more likely to get pulled over for a bike check if they think he's non LAMS ??

pretty sure my old license had vehicle types listed seperately with different *effective* dates on them to show when was valid to go for R's
car C
bike RE
now they are just listed together but i'd like to know how just paying money every five years shows my driving/riding proficiency without any training makes me a eligible to have a license, oh wait just like machinery tickets retraining they will eventually bring that in.

bonester's response sounds curious to me but given the amount of BS with any governing transport body it is quite feasible but i would not bother with the P plate on the zx9 if i had a license stating R

In vic, if your car license is still P's but you're unrestricted on your bike license, you must still display a P plate.

I did this for a year on the TLR.. Never got picked up or pulled over to be questioned about it at all, sometimes best just to do what legally is required. that way you can't be stung for anything

QMR Is fairly ANAL' I love living in QLD but it has to be the most backward state in aust. If you have to do 12 months on a learners then thats it doesn't matter if you are 5 or 55 you still have to do your 12 months

I'm still trying to get my head around "According to the definitions on the QLD Transport, a ZX-9R is not a high performance vehicle."
My eldest is on his green Ps and has only been pulled over on the YZF600 when the police wanted to discuss how many wheels should be in contact with the ground at any one time. :D

Hey blokes (and Gals)
Thanks for the replies. the 9r isn't a high performance vehicle, as power/weight isn't taken into account in QLD. And the other restrictions, such as peak power of 200kw, 8 Cylinders or more, and a turbo/super charged vehicle don't really apply. Obviously the boffin in the office who thought up the rules didn't take this scenario into account.

Having to wear/attach a Green P will be a pain. Think i might "forget to put them on". Ahh well. It'd be good if they made websites/ books much easier to understand, to avoid the confusion. Not alot of us speak "Government", and i certainly dont have time to wait for QLD Transport to reply to an email. :S

I lie in Vic and Qld's regs are a) wierd and b) clear as mud that being said, I'd go with Bonesters advice, given he's a QRide instructor he might have some inkling :)
