The US of Par-tay...

So as you may have known, Wifey and I (and our friend Marc) just spent 3 weeks in the US. :kuda:

We had an amazing time and saw many different aspects of the country. It's hard to describe some of the specific adventures/experiences but i'll try anyway.

Might need to do this over a few posts btw. :?

Destination 1: San Fransisco
After sitting on a plane for 12 hours, the comforting feeling of standing on solid ground was quickly replaced by terror as we sat in a kamikaze taxi from the airport to Fisherman's Wharf. But, despite the fact we were freezing our tits off, time was short and we had stuff to do. We jumped straight onto a city tour on a done up vintage car. The tour took us round the various parts of San Fran itself (Financial area, Presideo, Golden Gate Bridge, Union St, Nob Hill etc etc). Whilst it was great to get an overview of the city, it didn't provide too much substance.

Steep (check out the Switchbacks at the top of the street)

After the tour, we headed straight down to the ferry - destination Alcatraz. There was a bar on the Ferry :o but only for the return voyage :x
A bit of an uphill walk to the Main Cell block, but we got there, grabbed the Audio Tour, and headed straight in. Audio tour was pretty good and the whole place had an eerie feel about it. It was smaller than I expected but they still crammed 300 prisoners in there at once. It;s hard to imagine what it would've been like to be stuck in that place, and be able to hear the people enjoying New Years parties on the mainland. It was also pretty evident that trying to swim off the island would have been bloody hard with the really strong currents.

Back on the mainland, we checked into our uber lavish hotel, not before getting our Taxi driver to take us down the Lombard st switchbacks.

Oh la la

Day 2 was Mon and My 3rd anniversary so decided to have a picnic in the Park. The park in from of the "painted ladies" - better known for the house where the TV show Full House was set. We also checked out San Fran and met some locals.

Spinny thing to turn the Trams around - manual (they have to push it round)

WTF is everyone??? Olsen Twins must've be out making a porno or something.

Hunting is big in the US... Whatever you're after.

We spent the afternoon getting drunk and playing pool with locals. Turns out some of these locals were undercover cops

Ashley - our waitress.

Anyway, we shorlty after headed to Oakland to jump on a red-eye flight to Houston, Via Atlanta - Painful :x

Verdict: 4 Kudas :kuda: :kuda: :kuda: :kuda:
San Fransisco was great (wish we had more time there)

Destination 2 - Texas (Houston - Austin - San Antonio - Houston)

Everything is bigger in Texas - Something that i now truly believe!

We were lucky enough to be able to stay with our friend Kristen's parents in a flash area of Houston. They also allowed us the use of the Jag (they were going to give us the 5 series, but felt the Jag was bigger and would be more comfortable. :D
Image

BTW - no helmet laws in Texas bduh.gif
Image

The 1st 2 days in Houston were fairly uneventful but the nights were another story :partyman:  :drinkers: qswim.gif new_all_coholic.gif ...

Night 1 started with dinner at a Tex Mex joint with a friend of a friends, friends... before heading to another joint, before heading to another joint then i forget

Night 2 started with happy hour, followed by weird rum and lychee drinks at some other joint, followed by $75 worth of straight scotch downed in 6 seconds. I'm told that was followed a bit later by me almost getting in a fight with some locals, before they realised i was just a pissed Aussie and thusly becoming mates

Day 3 - very dusty. Our friend Kristin joined us for our trek to Austin to watch a college football game (University of Texas Longhorns VS University of Wyoming). We'd been told that this is something to behold but had no idea what we were about to experience...

Tailgate parties - the act of congregating around carparks, drinking beer, and watching sports :D This was HUGE. People had some insane setups like pop-up plasma screens, pull out gazebo's, fold-out BBQ's... Before we knew it, we'd been invited into one of these, handed a beer and a burger and immediately treated like part of the family. We were randoms off the street but they didnt care.

We then started walking towards the stadium for the game...

Then we got there
Image

Image

Image

Image

101000 fans (90% of them wearing burnt orange). This was for their 1st home game of the season  The NRL Grand Final got 86000 or there abouts...

It is very hard to describe the atmosphere, the passion these guys have for football and their home team. Austin doesn't have any professional teams so this is who they all support. Everyone has a Longhorns badge on their car, a poster/flag on the shop fronts, tattoo's and more...

This is one experience we will never forget.

After the Game we hit the town - 6th Street (the party street).

I met Patrice Pike - my 1st reserve wife. love4.gif

Patrice came 4th in the TV show Rockstar Supernova (Tommy Lee, Jason Newstead and Gilby Clarke). She's an Austin local but i had forgotten to see if she was playing that night. We happened to walk past a bar only to see her picture on the backdrop behind the stage - I was meant to be.

Big night 8)

Austin Verdict: 4 Kuda's :kuda: :kuda: :kuda: :kuda:
