im heading off for my first real holiday in about 11 years
me and my girlfriend are going to jyndabine for a week
apart from the walk to the top of kosciuzko i have no idea what to do in the area.
any ideas?

Looking at this: http://ski.com.au/snowcams/australia/ns ... edbo7.html seems to indicate pretty good snow cover still up in the Alps.

Sitting in front of an open fire with an alcoholic beverage and some good company of the opposite sex (or same if you're that way inclined) would go down well too.

Personally I'd like a holiday where I don't have to do anything...

The lounging around a fire with good company still would apply. Not sure what else there would be to do up there apart from sightseeing.

i was thinking, what is there to see?
snowy river scheme? any specific sights?

I'm not sure if the underground one (Tumut 2???) still does tours? That's kinda over near Cabramurra. There's some old historical stuff around Kiandra as well, on the old goldfields. There's some caves up there as well Yarongbilly or something kinda vaguely like that Lookouts through the national park... just a drive around the Alpine Way is nice too, lots of nice places to stop and look at stuff Well there was back in 2000 when I went through there in a car Could hire a tinny and go fishing... ummmm I can't believe you're going there without bikes

so no gym, no 2-5 hour cardio sessions, i can eat crap, i can drink etc.
its an attempt at becoming more human
ok, ill dedicate a day to go to the lookouts

Do some research on the Snowies scheme before you go so you can understand the enormity of the work . You can only see a fraction of what has gone on . Understanding what goes where will add to any exploring of the Scheme . Still the largest engineering project ever undertaken in Aus .

Assuming you have a car........ Tumut 2 power station is well worth a look. as are the numerous dam walls along the way. Down towards the bottom of the hill, Batlow is nice for a visit, with some of the best apples in Oz. Go Visit Blowering damn and see the place where Ken Warby broke the world water speed record in the Fosseys boat back in the 70's. While down there, the Trout farms are interesting for a look and a play. If you have you own gear, and enjoy fly fishing, then take to almost any of the little rivers up there and snag some wild trout. Visit the historic goldfields at Kiandra. There are several old huts dotted around the top of the mountain and are interesting to see. Horse trail riding is prolific up there that time of year. If you ducked over to Hotham, you can hire a mountain bike, catch a chair lift up to the top and bomb the hills. There is even a helicopter drop for mountain bike riders if you are that keen. A microlite flight from the airport at Porepunkah (Bright-Bottom of Hotham) is well worth it. The bloke who does it is a bike rider and he makes the trip.........err........interesting. He took me to (sssshhhh) 10,000 feet, let me fly it powered and turned the motor off while I was flying it!! He also let me try some high G turns. It was PFG!
The rivers up there are almost all crystal clear and icy cool. it's great on a sunny day, laying on the rocks by the side of the river, getting hot from the sun, sliding into the clear cold water and hoping back out to again bask in the sun on the warm rocks.
There are farm stays as well, brumby spotting tours. There are some historic homesteads dotted about the place up there, just goolge them prior to leaving or when you get there. Grass skiing is availble up there somewhere that time of year too from memory. Can't remember where it is, but I have seen it.

There's a few ideas off the top of my head. Have fun whatever you do.

Hire Down Hill mountain Bikes at Thredbo

There's heaps of great places to camp if you're into that, and hundreds of walks to do - everything from a few hundred metres to lots of kilometres. Yarronagbilly caves are worth visiting. I like Blue Water Holes - there's a few nice walks there too. If you've got a 4by there's tracks to lots of the old huts that are worth visiting too.

Go nuts, it's a great place to visit in summer.
