Two types of rear OHLINS for ZRX.

Dunno if anyone has noticed, there are two (actually 4 if you include spring colour choices) types of rear OHLINS shocks- one has a hydraulic preload adjuster and the other adjusted with a C spanner or so it would seem. Is there any difference in them? What difference in price is there? I didn't realise there was two models available until after I had ordered the hydraulic one. Prices seem to vary widely, so I don't know which is the better or is there a difference? What gives? Thanks.
Woose from AMCN has the other- C spanner shocks on his ZRX. They are the ones the Aussie importer quoted me on. Buying from the US importer should have saved me around $750 including postage!

I think both those units are similiar internally, with the external hydraulic adjustment the only difference. However, Phil knows 100% as he has them on his Rex. PM him or give him a call if you have his number, he should be able to recite the correct spring rates as well as the compression circuit shim stack order!

Phil doesnt have the "off the shelf ZRX" ohlins. he has a different type.

They hydraulic preload isnt really a needed item, but handy if you pillion often, as you can just wind a bit on when needed.

The Hydraulic preload ones are the older style, only have 4 settings for reb and comp. Mine are the other ones (416/417 from memory, same as Woose ;) ) They have different internals and 20+ clicks of comp & rebound adjustment. I was told by T-Rex himself that they were the better option, and waht goes on T-Rex prepared machines these days.

Both models have length adjustment ;)

Prices will vary widely as, dont get trapped - as others have - thinking that apples are being compared with apples ;)

Oh and Wattie, other end is the "not off the shelf" stuff ;) :kuda:

Yes but they are still Ohlins - they will be good - dont worry bout that. ;)

Of the guys down here Rod, Nelso & Rob all have that model. Eric & I are the only ones with the 416/417. Rod and Nelso dont seem to have any issues with theirs - havent seen Rob for a while but last time I did he was grinning with that grin an Ohlins owner has :D

Mine were like that at about 25k too. But the good thing is, from there they don't tend to deteriorate much further!!

Being that they are over $1000 will you take a hit from the Aussie taxman for import duty?
or
Are they under $1000 cost + freight, dunno if it makes any diffrence, but I was under the impression once you went over $1000 you were slugged an import tax.

I am seriously thinking of this as my next mod. Even though they cost about the same as the trade in value of a 2001 ZRX with 90,000 k,s on it.

Since I am not allowed to update, I may as well improve what I have.

most suppliers will dodge that for you if the sale depends on it ;)

I have never paid import tax and some of my orders have WELL over $1000. Just ask then to advertise different on the outside invoice. They'll do it :D

How much was Steve Cramer quoting for the 416/417's these days?

$1995 or thereabouts RRP. Looking on other sites there is no price difference between the ZRX shock models.

Mate if you want to sell that bike for the amount of a pair of OHLINS I'd be interested. I want a ZRX track bike. :D

There is another option available from GAZI Suspension which I fitted to my ZRX and were making a real difference before I unfortunatley through it down the road. They have fully adjustable sport model which are purpose built for ZRX-types and will cost you less than $1,000.00. The GAZI boys claim comparable perfomance to more expensive brands such as Ohlins and they must be doing something right because T-Rex has also fitted these to a few of his bikes.

Take a look at www.gazisuspension.com.au or speak to the business owner, Paul Bushell...

Phil,
I emailed them this afternoon,

G,day,

Could you please provide me with price & availability on Ohlins rear shocks to suit a ZRX 1200R 2001.

I see 4 variations on the Ohlins website you link to, what are the differences?

Thanks,

REPLY

Hi Errol,

We do have to order them from Ohlins, and would normally take around 3 weeks..

The suggested retail is $1995.00..

Difference.

KA149 comes with a Hyd Spring Pre-load Adjuster, but offers a very basic Compression Adjuster. (Yellow Spring)

KA416 No Hyd Spring Adjuster, manual spring pre-load adjusting, but much better compression adjuster/system. (Black Spring)
KA417 Same as above, but with Yellow Spring.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards,

Craig Shine
Manager

Sounds to me like all types the same price here in OZ.
