help please - speedo gauge has a ticking noise?
Ticking (or clicking) noise from the speedo gauge?
speedo cable inner was pulled out from the outer casing, cleaned and oiled, and runs freely.
So unless something fell off like an oring or spacer from the gauge connection end I think the cable is ok?
The noise seems to come from inside the speedo gauge where the cable connects at the rear, in that area somewhere.
Its quite loud as you can hear it whilst riding on the road!
You can even hear it when you shift the bike when the motor is not running and the speed of the noise is dependant on speed(rotation) of front wheel, obviously.
Anyone come across this before?
any suggestions what it may be?
Thanks

What about where the inner plugs in?
Have a look at that at the back of the speedo, it may be rounded out

Common sign of a cable that's about to break...does the needle jerk back and forth?

No needle nice and smooth.
dont know if its rounded out or not at the back of the gauge where the cable inner goes into, but I think if anything the speedo is indicating slightly higher speed than what i am actually doing, if thats possible?
if it was rounded out wouldnt the inner cable be slipping therefore indicating a lower speed on the gauge than what I am actually doing?
Puzzling.
I am getting use to it as I dont notice the noise too much anymore above the engine.

Most bike speedos read high. Most japanese bikes I have owned read anywhere between 5-10% high. Think of it as licence insurance!

As for the ticking noise, I still think your cable is stuffed. Just because you stripped and cleaned it, doesn't mean it will work properly. If the cable has started to seperate internally, then this could be causing the ticking noise. It would not necessarily make the speed oread lower either. It might just have oone point where it grabs in the casing a little and this is what is causing the tick most likely. Lash out the $30 or whatever it is these days for a new cable and live happily ever after!

Hi Guys.
Yep think I have found it.
Decided to finally investigate and removed the cable to see what is going on.
U right, there is a loose wire end at the top end of the inner.
Must of been touching the outer.
Looks like a new inner should hopefully solve the problem.
Thanks for your inputs.
