EHR and NBN are more important for me

NBN is a waste of media space if you ask me, there was some fool on radio the other day saying if it's not 100mbit then it's a waste of time, I'd say that 99.5% of the households in Australia (it's a home NBN as far as I know, most businesses that need fast internet have it aside from the home network) doesn't need any faster than good old ADSL2+.

The only thing I can think of that you need super ultra dooper fast huge bandwidth for is streaming stuff, I mean it doesn't really make that much difference if a download takes 4 seconds or 2 minutes, you still have to wait for it to finish to do anything with it. How much stuff gets streamed and how much bandwidth does it use? I mean really...

Even gaming nerds get by with ADSL2+ and some of them are the most nerdiest people on the planet.

In my opinion the NBN is about building infrastructure for the future, not about giving us what we need now. I will admit though that I'm mightily skeptical that they'll delivery it to my door and suspect it will go the way that the Transact rollout in Canberra did and they'll give up before they are finished.

Abbott's solution is about giving me what I've already got now so as far as I'm concerned it's not a solution at all.

Anyway the EHR and the work being done around it is more important to me and Abbott wants to scrap it....again, because he scrapped Healthconnect too and set health communications back about 5-10 years in the process. The guy's a luddite so he won't get my vote.

Personally i'm with Mick, I think the NBN is very important, especially as a future project, the internet as it stands with ADSL2+ is fine for home use but with seriously decent bandwidth then all of a sudden remote medical techniques, decent video conferencing for businessses and a whole heap of other shit becomes viable.

As for the health system, Jeff Kennett did a lot of work on our health system and indeed our education system back when he was in office so we now have a health and education system second to everyone, ie it's fucked and needs something to fix it, not sure feds taking over the whole system is the answer but.. as it stands currently if a patient is lying on a trolley for a week due to no beds the hospital blames the state govt who then blames the feds who then pass the buck back to the states, at least if the feds run the whole system then the buck knows where to stop.

Oh and not sure that Seiko1 and "I think" are compatible in the same sentence really.

If anybody thinks that any Gumbyment is ever going to put sufficient cable in the ground for a NBN, then I have a bridge for sale for you, real cheap, single span with views of the Opera House ;)

We might get a second rate wireless service, but don't hold your breath..................

enviro policy does matter to me, but then im in one of the more forward thinking industries, and i give a shit about leaving something for people in the future... the other genius thing about 'green technology' is that if we all did it, it'd be cheaper than what we've currently got... no-ones got the balls to step up to the plate, no-one wants to be first... i cant understand why we wouldnt want to be the country that did something first...

i also agree that the NBN is about building infrastructure for what we might need in 30 years, something that large in scale cant be updated regularly, so you need to bite the bullet and put in place the infrastructure that the nation can grow into...

Great Pinchy, you go and tell China and India to slow their economy and stop polluting then..or will we just fix the worlds problems by jacking up my grandmothers heateing costs   All we will achieve in OZ is fuck all by a carbon tax, except higher prices on EVERYTHING..

Well meaning people mistake labors carbon tax for helping the environment...they are 2 different things, however labor rely on the uneducated vote of people thinking it will make a friggen difference..and they get it too..

In regards to the NBN it's costed at $46 billion..the opera house was initially quoted at 7 million and ended up costing over 102 million..do you think the NBN will end up at $46 billion..most probably double initial costs based on labors recent management contracts. There have also been IT experts from the states featured on ABC 24news stating it will be a waste of money, and we will all be wireless in 10-15 years..I mean it's like the government spending 20 billion on land line phone improvements when no one uses them any more cause everyone uses mobiles..

In regards to thinking you need nbn for video conferencing, I regulary do a video conference now with my colleagues wirelessly...I did my last one from Maccas at Croydon yesterday..  no need for NBN...not required

How Gillard and Swan get any support is beyond me..but they will win tomorrow and we will have a NBN and a carbon tax...and when your paying through the ass to run your electricity and put petrol in your car it will be all too late...ive started saving already.. :kuda:

Funny , I seem to remember Joan Kirner doing a number on the education system , but what would I know . And as for "I think" and Seiko being compatible in the same sentence , try this ..................

Quote Seiko .. " I think I will throw a bit a bit of pre election fuel on the fire "

Hoffy, your first paragraph illustrates my point, if nobody leads we won't go anywhere... The whole attitude of 'we wont do anything until India/china/USA do' is so devoid of any inspiration, true reason, or leadership it's staggering...

Well the result (or lack of) is exactly what I thought it would be.
These dopey pollies think they have all the answers when clearly they have NFI ;)
If climate change were an issue, the Greens would have close to 100% of the vote.
They imagine they have control over climate change, if indeed it exists, but by driving our utility bills 300% higher in 1 year,
all they suceed in doing is pissing off all the voters.
They crap on about the mining super tax, and negotiate with the mining companies, like the everage joe blow could give a fuck,
but forget or ignore the fact that they "really pissed off" THREE MILLION smoking voters with a 25% tax slug
The next election is State.......but they will learn nothing from this Fed election

If we had a KSRC Party and promised "We will return your utility bills to that of 2 yr's ago and remove all but red light camera's and stop taxing your
vices through the roof" we would have a landslide vote and win 100% of the vote
