Get a klx/r 300 or 400 and stick some motard tyres on it.
I was about to buy one but i've been giving the bank account a bit of a thrashing lately and can't really justify 3 bikes.
From what the guys here have said and from what i've read if you get a road/trail bike with rego all you need is motard tyres and off you go.
Fuck yeah MOTARD IT UP!!
Edit: Those are LAMS bikes, I just noticed you're on a 9 get a 600

It's not that easy.
I have a Rod's old KLX400 with Motard wheels and it's great fun loosing bigger bikes on the bends and backing it in just about anywhere. Whats even better is that I can chuck the dirt tyres + sprockets on in about 10mins and go and get dirty. HOWEVER
At no stage is it REALLY a motard. A motard has different suspension, wider rims and tyres on the rear (190 not 150) and generally better brakes (twin disc or multi piston).
I like my KLX for the reasons above but if your only looking to motard it then dont expect expect a dirt bike to handle like one. You cant load up the suspension on full lean ( I learnt that quick) like you can on a motard.,

True.
The single disc brakes and suspension is a big one and wider rims not being able to fit with modification is also another thing. Also the trail bike has no cush drive which would make a lot of difference on performance and wear.
BUT. If you were going to do all those mods you might as well by a super motard.
Sticking motard tyres on a trail bike could be cheap awesome fun
something like:

thanks
Reedy and
Blurr for the advice

the option of getting a super motard or or dirt squirter and motarding it up is still undecided, im just looking for something cheap and nasty to fuck around on, wheather it be through the twistys and/or hitting the mud

Motards are great fun, but they are not cheap

. Dont buy a cheap trailie and think you'll get a set of rims cheap - they are big $$ - I'm not kidding. If you could get a set cheap, like about $1000 to $1500 you may be OK, depends on what sort of "cheap" trail bike you get. I got Rod a steal on the rims that are on what is now Russ's bike, they were $1200 odd from memory and they were a serious bargain at the time.
If you want to stick trailmax's on the std rims - well thats not a motard

Its a dirtbike with road tyres
Just my .02 worth
