Hamilton apologises for burnout

UK Formula One star Lewis Hamilton has had his car impounded by police after doing a burnout in Melbourne.

Lewis Hamilton has been forced to apologise for his latest embarrassing indiscretion in Melbourne.

After setting the fastest time in practice for Sunday's Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton was departing the Albert Park circuit when he foolishly opted to perform stunts in his loaned Mercedes.

Unfortunately for the 2008 Formula One world champion, the incident was in full view of a police patrol vehicle, which resulted in the 25-year-old promptly being pulled to one side.

It is now likely Hamilton, whose car has been impounded for 48 hours, will be charged with improper use of a vehicle, which could result in a fine following an appearance in court.

Issuing a statement via McLaren, Hamilton said: 'This evening, I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police.'

'What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it.'

It is understood Hamilton performed tyre-smoking 'burnouts' and 'fishtails' which, along with any other form of hooning, are outlawed by police.

'The vehicle was seen to deliberately lose traction and was intercepted by police,' confirmed a Victoria Police spokesman.

'The driver, a 25-year-old man who resides in Switzerland, was spoken to at the scene and is expected to be charged on summons with improper use of a vehicle.'

'The vehicle, a 2010 Mercedes, was impounded for 48 hours and the driver assisted back to his hotel, which was about six kilometres away.'

The spokesman added: 'There were no problems whatsoever when the driver was stopped.'

'He was with a male passenger in the car.'

Regarding the prospect of a potential court appearance and fine, the spokesman stated: 'It's something that will be settled in court and would be a monetary matter.'

'None of the court times or dates have been set as yet.'

It is not Hamilton's first offence.

In December 2007 he was caught speeding at 195kmh in France, which also culminated in his car being impounded, as well as a month-long driving suspension in that country.


Significantly, this incident comes a year after Hamilton was caught lying to stewards following last season's grand prix in Melbourne.

After a brilliant drive to finish fourth from 18th on the grid, Hamilton was promoted to third after Jarno Trulli, then with Toyota, was penalised for passing him under the safety car.

However, Hamilton was ultimately disqualified after the stewards decided he and McLaren had provided misleading evidence relating to the incident.

Mark Webber says Victoria becoming a 'nanny state'

HOMEGROWN grand prix hope Mark Webber has lashed out at red tape in Australia, saying it is increasingly becoming a nanny state.
Speaking before today’s Australian Grand Prix, Webber said increasing rules and regulations left him feeling like he needed to read an instruction book before getting out of bed.
"I think we've got to read an instruction book when we get out of bed - what we can do and what we can't do," Webber said
"Put a yellow vest on and all that sort of stuff."
"It's certainly changed since I left here. It pisses me off coming back here to be honest.
"It's a great country but we've got to be responsible for our actions and it's certainly a bloody nanny state when it comes to what we can do."
The comments come after fellow Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton had his car impounded for doing burnouts after leaving the Albert Park track on Friday night.

Is he suggesting that everyone should be allowed to do burnouts, donuts and fishtails whenever they feel like it?

Can't see any problems with that Jase - we all did it when we were kids, and look at the solid citizens we all turned out to be !!!

Maybe if the kids could blow off a bit of steam with a burnout, the rate of knife assaults & stabbings would drop a bit ? Who's to say .....

There is a time and place for everything. Take the place away from the kids, they find somewhere else toplay, usually in the worst possible locations!

Ahh, the joys of growing up in a small country town. Burnouts at near every turn, fishies, line lockers and drifting! What a way to learn some driving skills

Weldo is only to well aware of our Church on Sundays at the 3 mile. Utes, cars, whatever. Going at it for hours and never once did we ever get hurt or hurt someone else. Good old fun in the bush!

Nanny state, Not in my opinnion. But you gotta give these people somewhere to have fun and not charge the earth to do it

The fatality rate from burnouts and doughies is just astronomical

There seems to be a law for everything in Australia. It's ridiculous

Ill suggest, the gumbyments let cops do their job and use discression. I would assume that most cops have a good idea who’s going to be the ones that require a kick in the ass and the ones that need steering in the right direction. Not make some nit picky law on simple things.

On serious issues, such as running from the cops, give em what for! Shits me to tears that people consider running an option or say they were scared. Scared of what, being held responsible for your action?

It sure as shit worked like that where i grew up. The cops didn’t just throw the book at you, they gave you options. If you didn’t listen, you got everything in the book thrown at you. I think they called it policing out there. Not law enforcement!

Too much in the discretionary powers......it only takes one that likes his donuts and dislikes everything 2 wheeled....
