What really is grip glue?

Post by wilf »

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what type of glue are used for grip glues? Or, anything that's suitable as a substitute for grip glue. Is grip glue just rubber cement? I don't really want/like to pay $15 for what really is a $5 tube of glue rebranded "Renthal Grip Glue" or whatever, plus bunnings is 5 mins down the road and bike shop is 1/2 hour away lol yea I'm lazy. Have tried the good ol hairspray and failed.

So yea, any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hairspray usually works :?
Go to Clark Rubber or Bunnings & get some contact adhesive ;)

You can a product from bunnings called Gel Glue. Basically the same as the old "snot" glue. I use it when I replace grips on my golf clubs and rain hail or shine they never come loose but as soon as you blow air down the grips the seperate from the shafts. Worth a look at, normally found in a little tin.
Run what ya brung...............make damn sure you brung enough!!!

sweet as thanks for the suggestions! yea I dont know why but the hairspray allows the grip to twist too easily. It dries quick but id rather something thats waterproof, won't ever slip...even at the expense of longer curing time and difficulty to remove afterward. :kuda:

Gel bond or contact adhesive are going to make sure you NEVER EVER get those grips off.

Id go down to officejerks or harvey norman and grab some photo glue (comes in a tube for about 5-7 bucks.)
When you need to get it off you just rub the shit and it balls up. Its also acid free so it wont do lasting damage over time.

Hairspray does a bangup job. I've used it on my current grips and it's been there for 3+ years.

I didn't use anything when I changed the grips on teh CBR - they were very tight to fit, used an air line to get then on. They've never moved.
