new bike purchase.... I DID IT!!

Not a sportsbike though ..... just warning you :P

I'd like some help please and I'm sorry for two dopey questions but... I want to buy a new bike for a birthday present next week and I need some information! He used to ride a ZZR1100 and I know he wants the KLR650 but how can I differentiate between the learner legal and the unrestricted, I don't know how to check & am not great at "taking someones word for it"!?

Other question is on pricing.... now I've been told the ticket price at two dealerships (the ticket price varied by $500 so was not confident to start with) and then I got their "best price"... My question is how much room is there on price to realistically wiggle? I saw the cost price on my Ninja at Christmas and thought I could have got a better deal ( I paid $7600 ride away) - then I hear about blokes who negotiate great prices including gear bags, covers and so on but I feel lost about how to do it!

I'd love to give him a great surprise - that didn't end in tears when he finds out what I spent  ..... if you known what I mean.

Any pointers??

Megs

Yeah he wants the dual purpose bike... At least it's a Kawasaki! From what I understand they have LAMS models & unrestricted but I don't know how to tell one from the other, thought it may have been model codes or plate numbers?

According to RTA, only KLR650's up to 2008 are LAM's approved.

Link to Kawasaki site ..... http://www.kawasaki.com.au/index.php?ca ... product=82

However, Kawasaki say the 2010 KLR650 complies with NSW LAM's ...........dontknow.gif

HTH ;)

KLR650s only have 15kW of power- they all are restricted and LAMS bikes. Derestricting them doesn't change their LAMS status. :)

 He's one lucky bloke to have you Megs

Whenever Ive bought a new car / bike, then re price my best advice to look at used approx 1 year old. Get an idea of what a KLR650 is advertised for with up to say 3000 kays on board and youll get a rough idea of how to screw down a good new price. Ive often used this as a guide. Got a dealer from 62K on a supposed 65K new car down to 49K driveaway this way

In saying that I reckon it would be awesome to see a new bike in the garage on my bday but IMHO I would either make a massive card with a big picture of the type of bike you want to get him, or just hop down to the dealership and tell him to go for it... If I was him Id want some input into what I was riding!!! Id also hate to think my partner had been ripped off by someone :x

Good Luck ;)

Thanks for that - I think you are right and might take him to the dealers on the weekend and buy it together, his birthday is Monday so the weekend is close enough!

As for a lucky bloke - he still has to put up with me day in and day out - so not that lucky really!!!

So today I took him to the dealer and looked at gloves, and my bike... and then the next bike I want one day & dragged him over the bike he wanted that was just put together. I asked him to sit on it and he wouldn't, then the young bloke at the shop encouraged him a bit and he sat on it and was saying Yeah he liked this model, really wants one blah blah and I got to say

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY ITS YOURS'" :D :D :D

I had already sorted a great deal (with lots of hard work and putting up with some right tools at different dealers) and when I told him the price he was more than happy (better than he thought he could get) and he even got some stuff thrown in. YAH!! So I bought it !
We finished the day off with a trip to Sydney to get a new jacket.

Whilst I would have liked to see some girlie jumping around and squealing, the big grin was so worth it and every now and then I hear a quiet ''Wow".

Did you buy the bike from Kawasaki Newcastle?

If you are worried about the lack of power and it being a LAMS bike here would be many options to open it up a bit.
