Gpz wont start -

Post by zxtc »

Hi All

Been servicing/fixing my gpz900r and know it wont start.
It has a flat battery but running jumper leads off a turned off car i get
all the lights/horn etc to work but when i push the start button
i get absolutely nothing. Not even trying to turn over?
Checked all the usual fuses relays.
Any ideas?

Cheers Mick

Hi Mick

Do you have/have you checked:

Dodgy side-stand switch?
* Is the stand up?
* Can you measure it's resistance with a multimeter?
* Does it change with the stand up/stand down?

Dodgy clutch switch?
* Ditto, can you measure the resistance of the switch with a multimeter?
* Does it change with the clutch in and out?

Starter motor knackered?
* Harder to check, but do you have 12V across the terminals when the start button is pushed?
* Measure across the battery when the start button is pushed. Does the voltage drop?

If the bike is stored outside in the weather go nuts with some WD40 and start pulling off exposed terminals and giving them a clean (I'm thinking starter motor terminals).

HTH, Mick

#1 - Get a new battery.
#2 - Check the cut-out switches as described by Ratmick. The sidestand cutout switch is the most likely culprit, closely followed by the clutch lock-out.

You need a multimeter to test these properly.....

There may be issues with your starter solenoid as well, but a new battery is the first thing needed.
