Hey guys, newbie here from Canberra.

Name's Ron, 22 and just about to get my learner's (excited) so pretty much decided that I'd rather get a ZXR250 over the CBR or RS. If you guys have any tips or advice that would be awesome

I would steer well clear of all the 4cyl 250 personnally, a Ninja 2Fidy is a much better - and newer - option

But hey, its your call. You wouldnt be the first person the ask the question - get advise - and then ignore it

Got to agree with Phil, although the 4cyl's go to the heavens with their redline, they certainly seem a little fussier at the lower revs. Some may say i'm talking out my arse here, but I have found that it can be a slight pita getting clutch feathering right on the small 4 cyl's compared to the 2 cyl 250's & bigger 4 cyl bikes.

Oh and if that's insufficient deterrent, think how many wanna-be boy racers may have touched the zxr before you in an effort to have "the fastest and bestest" learner legal bike around.

Phil's right, the new 250 looks yards better than the old zxr250.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of reliability, parts availability, re-sale and age, but add Mikes valid points as well and the case is mounting against the "grey import 250's".

That too (i can't believe i forgot about the whole "grey" thing), but just adding my $0.02

If you want a 4, and you've decided on the zxr250....... then get a good one and have a ball!!!!

As for Kevins' bike, he got it from a dealer, it had lots of problems and they sorted them all out under warranty, so it might be as close to a clean/well maintained ZXR you'll find.

Another perspective, how long are you gonna be on your l's p's in canberra?

If it's 3 years like NSW then maybe go a twin like Phil and Mike are saying, then get a 4 as your 2nd bike once you've developed your technique, afterall, you've got the rest of your life to ride sports bikes.

thanks for the info and advice Phil & Mike. Tim, i only have to be on my L's for a minimum of 3 months and then P's for 12 months, but i have made up my mind that it would be in my best interest to stay on the L's for as long as it takes for my technique and awareness to be perfect for the P's assessment. i'm happy to listen to both sides of the argument. what advantages/disadvantages would there b in jumping from the 2 to a 4? what to look out for when inspecting possible bikes to purchase?

With licensing, just get your ls, ride and don't worry about passing your Ps, practice the stuff you learn for your ls like crazy, then learn about more riding technique and practice it like crazy, and ride as much as you can on different roads and conditions and the Ps test will be a walk in the park.

My #1 tip, keen your arms relaxed! Flap 'em like a chicken if they're stiff - you're sure to laugh and loosen up on the bars.
