nissin caliper issues on the gumby

Post by 2006zx10r »

Hi Guys,

Ive finally made the jump to zx14 calipers on the 06 10r. The previous upgrades were brembo 19x20, ss lines and race pads, this combination was fine for the track, no fade good braking etc. However i always wanted to see what the nissin calipers could do.

The nissan have been installed along with the above upgrades and race fluid, with stock zx14 pads.

I have amazing brakes, however a few issues have arisen on a 300k shake down run.

1. I have no lever travel, the brakes are either on or off, its very very difficult to modulate. I usally trail the brakes deep into a corner, now i cannot do it, as i have little or no modulation and lack of feel.
2. In the wet, this combo offered no feel, and no confidence.
3. No initial bite, just heaps of braking force.

The question i have is for those that have this combo, are your experiences the same ???

If not should i change the MC, pads to get a better feel ??

Thanks in advance

mine had stock M/c, they were definat;y touchier than standard, but maybe the 19/20 is pushing a bit too much fluid.

I've got the brembo MC and 14 calipers on Wardy's tracky that I've just bought. Haven't had it on the track but in the street pulling stoppies the setup feels pretty good, heaps of feel, you can keep it just off lifting the back wheel and then just stab it. I'll see how it goes at the creek on Friday.

I'll watch this thread with interest.......about the only thing left to change on the MFP12 now, as far as the brakes go.....is bunging on some of these Nissin calipers.

Is it true that the the 14 Nissin calipers are the same as the 07-08 ZX6 Nissins ??

thanks Wattie - the ZX14 Nissins seem to only pop up on ebay every now and then, here or the US - but the ZX6 ones appear a lot more frequently, and often for cheaper !!

I have the nissin's on my ZX6R with stock MC and has great feel... i know the feeling as i have the brembo set up on the 848 and yeah brakes well but no real feel. Could be the pads to i installed the DP pads with the nissin's, best pads i've used.

There is a chart on the TZ350 web site that has the ratios for MC piston size /caliper piston diameter . Pretty interesting read .
Had a 5/8 Yamaha MC against a Brembo 2 piston caliper on the A/C RD and it was very wooden , changed to a 14mm and it is so much better with feel and no loss of power .
Ummmm let me see

For those looking for a cheap alternative, I've installed 06-07 CBR1000RR calipers, and once they got some fresh pads have nothing but praise. Line pressure is way, way up, with very good bite. Only downside is that they require 5mm spacers to fit.

No idea how they compare to the 6-14 Nissins, but these definitely work, and are much easier to find.

Cheers,
