I wouldn't say it's easy, but it's doable. You need to be able to complete a similar course to make it onto our bike courses, and need to be highly proficient at it to get through the 4 week course.

Rob, I rarely wear my leather jacket when riding in the summer and on warmer days. Why? You tried riding for 8 to 12 hours in the middle of summer wearing leathers and a helmet? We're not talking about a 30 minute commute. And it's also about risk management. There are 60 guys in our section who cover 60 to 80,000 km's a year on average. At the lower end of the scale, that's a collective 3.6 million km's a year. We have less than 1 serious off a year. In fact, I can't remember the last time one of our guys came off and lost skin.

Taking all that into account, it would appear the chances of losing skin is quite remote. Even still, most of the guys will take it a lot easier when riding in a shirt. Unlike a lot of general punters who still ride around like fuckwits in their shorts and sandals.

We respect the right of other motorcyclists to wear whatever they want and I doubt you'll ever hear one of our blokes prattling on about setting an example when it comes to the appropriate atire.

Having said that, I would support the introduction of a minimum standard for riding gear. But you'd be hard pressed to cover all bases. It would have to pass crash testing (which would push the price up) and would have to allow people the freedom to still ride when they want (ie: commutes in winter, day long rides in the middle of summer - from the cooler climate of Tassie, to the supressing heat of central Australia).

I wouldn't want to be on that committee!

Yeah I hear you Jase, I was a motorcycle courier so 10 hours in the saddle was not uncommon, but working in the CBD meant I had to wear leather it was just too plain dangerous not to.... 40 Deg + days I would still wear all the gear & it paid off the day I was T boned by a Taxi

Yeah, there's that one in a million chance (1 in a 1000? 1 in 10?) chance that it'll pay off sooner rather than later. Until then, I'm prepared to take my chances and hope that my training is enough to help keep my skin intact.

At the end of the day, it's a safety issue. We don't make a big deal out of it at work as an OH&S issue for a number of reasons:
1) We like having the choice
2) If we jump up and down the department will turn around and say, "Well, you've got leathers, wear them."
3) If we complain the leathers are too hot and we want breathable mesh gear, they then turn around and say "You guys cost too much. We're shutting you down."
