I want to charge a battery on one of my bikes, but the Auto charger I have keeps telling me it's a 6Volt battery and it's fully charged, my Multimeter is telling me it has just over 4 volts in it but it's a 12 volt battery! I have only disconnected the earth lead to charge it. HELP!!! :?

Sounds like the battery could be dead, or at lease some cells.
I have a client that sells bike batteries, give me the details & I will price one up for you..... I have to go see him tomorrow anyway.

Will need outer dimensions terminal rotation & any code on the existing battery

Take it right out.
Is it dry or wet?
May need topping up with distilled water you can get from the servo :D

Woolies or coles too 8)
Problem is if its a wet Battery & has run dry the cells can be damaged.
Paul have you used tha charger on another battery to see if you get the same result?

Steve - SuperCheap also have a pretty good range of bike batteries these days :kuda: I didn't know that K-Mart did as well

DP - sounds to me like a couple of cells in that battery have sulphated badly - so they are effectively *dead* and the charger cannot fix them.

If you can get to a place like Battery World (or some of the larger auto-chains) - look for a product called " Inox Battery Conditioner" - its a cadmium sulphate solution, and it can reverse the chemical reaction in the cells that have sulphated - and bring your battery back to life. If the cells are fully 'white' from sulphation, it may not revive the battery - but it can fix cells that only have a white 'spot' showing.

I have revived a lot of older batteries with this stuff - the trick is to keep batteries charged all the time - letting them discharge to low, will fuck them every time.

That stuff works well, I put it in all my batteries as soon as Winter hits and I aviod the usual
"Death by Cold" effect I used to cop every Winter :D
Jesus, everyday shops stocking Bike Batteries  , next thing you know they'll be treating us as Humans :D
