Hi everyone,

In about 3 weeks time I'm going on a weekend away and camping - on the bike.

I've got an RJays expandable rack bag which I'm thinking would be best slipped over the rack but sitting on the pillion seat with my tent tied down on the rack at the rear. My concern is weight distribution.

Considering a 15-20 litre tank bag up front for ipods, gps, panadol, tyre repair kit, basic tools etc - stuff to have at hand.

Any suggestions as to what to be aware of when riding with a load?

Taking:
Tent
sleeping bag
airbed
food provided when I get there
2xt-shirts
1xjeans
socks / jocks / sneakers

Will be travelling about 240kms one way.

Any advice as to this type of trip would be appreciated.

Pack light....... my x used to take everything on rallys so it got to a stage where I would make her throw our stuff on the bed & then I would halve it & thats all we could take looks like you have a fairly light load so nothing to worry about there just keep the heavy stuff to the bottom of your bag

Try to keep the weight where you would have a pillion.... ie forward of the rear axle. And not too much weight in the tank bag.

I prefer to have heavier stuff over the pillion seat..

Thanks for the advice guys - very helpful. Really looking forward to this trip.

Not sure I get the reference to the "date roll" - but will make sure I carry some food and drink for the trip.

240k's ??? thats one day on the old road. we just did over 5000k's and esentials are (that havnt been mentioned here)1. chamois/visor cleaner 2. chain lube 3. bog roll 4. tools 5.puncture repair kit 6. wet weathers and 7.roadside assist.

As the others said,minimal clothes is the go.

Ride safe and come back in one piece.

oh, take a torch,and strap the luggage down good. We had a load lost that was not recovered. Said rider not happy Jan.

Same set up I use on my ZZR. It works well. If pumping an air bed up a lot, I carry a small light 12V air pump, hard wired up a ciggie lighter socket in the little lockable space (WTF can you fit in there?) on the left hand side of the dash. Can also use this for charging phone, camera batteries on the go.

you can get a big waterproof bag from kathmandu that will hold your tent and sleeping bag. if you have a self inflating mattress you can let it unroll inside the bag and it forms a sort of a case. then anything you want to keep dry goes inside that. I always take a big warm beanie and something I can wear in the sleeping bag at night in case it gets cold. travel towels are handy. andy strapz work well.

Yes- maybe go to the loo before you leave

No seriously, we are off for the Easter weekend down to Belligen and Armidale to do the Oxley (me pillioning because of the stupid stuffed up hoof of course). I have been told that I am only allowed to take one hairdryer , so my advice would be....

When riding with a load make sure that there is still enough room for your hairdryer!

I used to live in Armidale - better to go now than in winter. Love Bellingen when it's not underwater tho.

Hairdryer??..rofl...I love my number 1 hair cut!

Katmandu bag sounds ideal as do the andystrapz - will look into them. I've done a lot of camping but this is the first time away on the bike - usually its a campertrailer fully loaded
