Dunno about that Dave , but have seen mobile phones with GPS used as timers . Free software from from memory "racecrono" or some such . They had a lot of aussie tracks listed on their site .

I can't see what the update rate is in the specs, mine is 5Hz, and I know they are using up to 10Hz now also. This governs the accuracy as it updates the position more frequently.
I'm using a Qstar GPS nano like this one

Looking at specs I'd say its a 1hz so slower updates, but its much cheaper..
What would the accuracy difference between 1 hz and 5hz..? ie, a second or less.?

from what i have learnt over the last couple of weeks online and talking to a few nerds e.g. Dave#3 and my IT guys at work

is this
5Hz = equals 5 position refreshes perr second therefore more acuaracy ove the 1Hz that obviously one does it once.

I know when I used Watties that it played up a little if it couldnt see more than 10 satalites.

Dave I am using one of these:
http://www.holux.com/JCore/en/products/ ... sp?pno=222
Bought from a phone cover stall in Castle Towers for $115
In one session at the Creek it picked up 16 satelites
I have paired it with a N95 & have never been let down, unlike a dude I was trying to help at the creek recently, he had a cheaper smaller one & it would not work even though it had a wireless connection & was reading on the phone
Have you checked out the list of compatible phonnes on Race Chrono Dave?

these work perfect..mine picks up from the centre console in my car and has worked perfect for 2 trackdays so far. They are solar assisited so last 20 hours or so and take a nokia battery which is sourced easily if needed. Also has a magnetic base if required.
This is the cheapest your going to get a good one..

You'll go faster if you stay on the black stuff between 1 and 2 and also 7 and 8
