Mate, unless it's a really, really good telly (errr, unless it was a really, really good telly) then you might as well through the sucker away and buy another one.

What make and model is it?

60 inch Hitachi CRT projector.........up until the picture went walkabout, it was a good picture.
I'm hoping it's just an IC thats failed as the screen went black instantly as I was watching it, but want to get an idea of the cost to repair it..........then a decision will have to be made

my dads mate had a sony one and it just had to do with the globe in it dying from overheating, it wasnt that old either.
Could be that! Maybe its overheating full stop, maybe a good clean out of the dust can help !?!?

I also think its the globe if its a projector..... try and get a new globe for it although they can be very expensive

Thanks guys....... but the clue is in the letters CRT
Cathode Ray Tube ;) 3 of 'em which are projected on to a mirror focussed on to the screen

You get the sharpness but a lack of pixellation of an LCD screen & none of the heat associated with a plasma ;)

I suppose that if no one has any recomendations for a teev repairman, that I'd better get my toolbox out
I'm such a coward when working inside tellies..........they hold on to some serious voltages for a long time after being un plugged........... so I end up looking like I'm trying to defuse a bomb

If it was mine I'd try to get a free quote........

As for "Jims", there's always the VERY satisfying "Jims smash the old TV with a brick" franchise

;)

i dont see how you can compare a CRT rear projection TV with what i can guess has a resolution of 704x480 to a full 1080p TV with a max res of 1920x1080.

anyway CRT RP TV doesn't use globes, it uses 3 guns which project a cathode ray... hence the name.
i doubt all of the guns have died at once, so it might be a problem with the high voltage converter. this was common when my dad and i used to fix tvs for a living, but its hard to say for sure without looking at it.
shame you arent in sydney, havent opened the back of a TV in years
take it to a tech mate, those guns need correct calibration to install if it is a problem with them. besides unless you have the schematics it may be difficult to assess the issue.

and yes, watch out for those capacitors, they can give you a very reinvigorating kick :D

Spot on. I doubt your CRT gets the quality I get when I play HD Movies (Blue-Ray) @ 1080p. My suggestion would be go buy a new LCD with a built in HD tuner. Those things are cheap as chips these days! I don't like plasma's because of the heat they radiate, and because of the screen burn, although the new "self cleaning" ones apparently do a good job of getting rid of it.

If you're hell bent on fixing this one though, I'd recommend getting a piece of insulated wire, and going around the TV and discharging ALL of the capacitors. Not to say they wont charge up again, as I have known some to do it! Better still, check the local phone book. There'd be someone in there who can fix it for you :)
