Dream come true

Last weekend I had the enjoyment of finally hitting the road with the old man for a ride from the Gold Coast to Rockhampton. My old man happens to be a bit of a legend in the Speedway/solos game having been one of the originals to travel and race alongside Ivan Mauger in Papua New Guinea. Like many we had a strained relationship growing up and even though our love for bikes has remained I often wondered if we would ever get to ride together. Dad being recently retired, I talked him into buying a 2006 T100 Bonnie ( he'd been procrastinating for a while), one catch, it was down here and he lives in Rockhampton. So I suggested the ride back up, at this stage he suggested loading it onto the back of a ute and driving back up. I won. He booked his flight and we set off early on Saturday morning. The ride and relationship up was awesome and the old man stills knows how to hold it wide open, even blew some cobwebs out of the Gixer. We hit Rocky about 1300 and then cruised down to yeppoon to catch up with the rest of the family. On Sunday we hooked up with my Brother Wayne, XJ600, and my cousin Grant, R1, and headed west to see a few pubs...... it was a magic day. The boys joined me on Monday morning at 0400 to ride the first 150klms back down, cool weather greeted us and and mother nature gave us one of those sunrises that will stay with you long after. This got us to Bororen and we said our goodbyes and I continued on. I'm still on a high from the whole experience, just loved it and I know Dad was just soaking it up. I just hope there's many more to come.
If you are looking at or dreaming of doing something like this, jump on it before it's to late.

What a great story, well done on your ride and mending a relationship'ish. My bro used to live in Rocky, for about 20 odd years. Lovely place, but gee it would be hot on a bike. lol
nice read, thanks heaps

What a great way to soothe a strained relationship with your Dad! I hope that you have many more rides together in the future

Man,
Wonderful story... ;o)
Any hints on how to get an ol' man back on a Bike? It's the kinda thing I would love to do with my ol' man, But He's resigned himself to a car as he thinks there are too many idiots on the road as compared to when he rode 30 years ago.....

Just wet his thirst mate, hire a bike for him for a day and go somewhere quiet. I guarantee once he's in the saddle the rest will be easy. Better yet, take him and a few mates for a ride and grab a countery and a coupla beers. My wife has just got her L's and that stemmed from one fuel stop where she got talking to another young lass that pulled up on an R6.
