hey all,
sorry but i didn't know which section to put this thread in.
Anyways, i have a kawasaki Zxr250c, 91 model which i bought a month or so.. i bought it for wrecking but since the bike is in whole and ill be getting it started soon, which im 90% sure it should start depending on the carbie and how dirty it is...
i want to get a blueslip for it, but im not sure of the process involved. I'll be needing to get a new front tyre, right brake lever, im goin to respray the fairing, new indicators and get a carbie rebuild.
what papers do i need to get it blue slipped because i bought it with no rta papers since it had been out of rego for 5 years and the previous onwer got it of a mate which he didnt have the rego papers for.. before i bought it we tried to get rego papers but it was to difficult, we had to call the onwer that was previous to the guy i bought it of..
Would it still be possible to get the blue slip, also i would need to bleeed the brakes or get new ones, so whats the go if i get new ones, becuase the serial codes won't match. would i need to keep recipets of everything i bought.
I dont want to send it to a shop and have a complete bike when it comes out, i want to do most of the work myself and learn about my bike.
What the best approach, Advice or anything that can send me through the right direction.
cheers all fadi.

ring the RTA tell them of your problem and have the make, year, aus compliance year, and engine no. handy, they should have record of the bike and what you need (other than a blue slip) in order to relisence it. THEN trailer it down to a bike shop ....of good repute..... someone in your area will know one ,you should be able to get them to do a quick rec of its RWC list whats wrong and estimate costs to meet your blue slip requirements ....this could and probably should be a no charge quote situation......work it from there
fix what you can get the shop to do anything you figure your not capable of , or call on the experienced members here for advice once you have an idea of whats needed . there is alot of mechanical expertise on this site hidden amongst the irreverant humour, birthday listings and the odd cat fight
2cents spent good luck

congrats on trying to tackle it yourself!
Since there was alot of questions I will try to answer in point form!
1. Firstly do a Rev check with the RTa before you do anything to make sure it's not a write off or stolen! You dont want to waste your time (this is free)
2. In the same process get follwo craigs advice and ring/go the RTA with all the relevent numbers ( frame no., engine no., licence plate no. if you have it). You will need these to take it for a blue slip (this should also be free)
3. Whilst at the Mechanic (I suggest you do not use your regular considerin the stories you have posted here about him

) they will inspect the bike and give you a list of fixes needed to pass if it does not already do so! If it does not pass should also be free!
4. When you have the list attempt what you can yourself! should be able to source a service manual on here off someone I am sure!!!
5. Brakes do not have to match numbers wise! I would suggest you stick with stock at this stage but numbers are of no concern in this process!
6. any questions you have outside of that I am sure there will be someone on here willing to offer advice!
Good luck

Thanks alot guys,
i already done the revs check, it is not stolen or written of, it has been dropped but hell, what 250 hasn't been dropped.
i have a paper between me and the old onwer sayin that i own it now, and it has all the numbers, so im going to call the rta and see how it goes, as for the mechanic, it was his idea to register it but he's not touching it, i know of a good mechanic who has helped me out and see how that goes..
i'll keep you guys posted on whats going on with the process and the build.

Basically make an appointment with a mechanic that can issue blue certificates, explain to them that you just want a list of what is required to register the bike. Some may put it down as your first visit, which will mean you have to get everything right before your second visit. Some may be more accomodating and let you drop by so they can give you a quick list of things that need to be repaired before they will sign off on it. Either way you now have a list of things to fix up before registering the bike.
Remember it is important to make an appointment with the mechanic as well as have their number on hand when you are on the way to get the bike checked out. This is because the only time an unregistered vehicle is permitted on the road is either on the way to, or from being inspected for registration. This way if the cops pull you over you have contact details for and a valid appointment with the mechanic, should they decide to call your bluff, not that i've ever heard of anyone ever having the cops follow up on one of these, but still its better to be safe than sorry.
Also remember that not all mech shops who can issue pinkies can issue blues (this is because there is "supposed" to be further thorough checks as well as checking VIN/engine no's match what your claiming.
Once you have a blueslip then go to your choice of insurer and get a green slip using the VIN (chassis #) and advise it is a new registration and you don't have a rego plate yet (unless you get a custom plate, in which case you can use that). Once you have the blue & green slips, make a copy of the sales reciept (the rta will want to keep the original, if you forget they can just photocopy the reciept for you & give you that to keep) head to your local RTA branch and register the thing.
It's dead easy to do and i've done it for three bikes now, though i had the added fun that two were interstate rego's and never were on the rta system and the third was last registered fifteen years before the rta was created so was a whole bunch of fun for me. If the bike is already on the system, it just saves them a bit of work.
