QLD New Rules

QLD Transport website doesn't have to much info and my local qld transport wasn't to helpful. I have been on my learners for about 5 years and have always been renewing it when required (uncle, brothers and mates have been in bike accidents and since i was such a smart arse on a push bike, no-one wanted me to get a motorbike but have finally talked them into it) When I renew my licence does that mean I have to wait another 6 months or whatever it is to get my licence?
I was also told that once you get your licence you are still restricted to 250cc. Is this correct? Is this for only new people getting their L's now?

not sure on QLD reg but in NSW you would be qualified to go straight for your P's after you pass your L's again!

By renew your licence, do you mean renew your learners, or do the test to get your provisional licence?
Anyway, this website link from Qld Transport has a lot of info that sounds relevant to your question.

Does anyone know about restrictions? I know you are restricted to 250cc when on your L's but was also told that after you pass Q-RIDE you are still restricted to 250cc

Back when I got my L's, when you passed Q-RIDE you go straight to Opens. Sucks as you can get 98-99 ZX-6R for the price of what 88-89 ZX-2R cost

all depends on your age?
under 30 you have a power to weight restriction for 12months

Power to weight only applies to NSW riders. Age doesn't count in QLD either.
Queensland rules are currently (and supposedly changing July next year) that you are limited to 250cc whether you test with Queensland Transport or Q-Ride. If you test through Queensland Transport, you have to wait six months after applying for the learners before testing. Q-Ride does not have this restriction. As a newly licenced rider you cannot take a pillion for a year, or accompany a learner for a year.
BTW I am a Q-Ride Instructor/Assessor and my school should be offering Q-ride in January/ February next year.

And are you still restricted to 250cc after passing Q-RIDE?

For the time being, yep. When QLD adopts LAMS, you should be able to upgrade.

You have to wait 12 months after RE (250cc) licencing before you can LEARN to ride an R class bike. I'm guessing this restriction will continue after July next year (proposed LAMS changes coming in) meaning another 12 month wait for a ZX6r coz they aren't LAMS approved. There has been a lot of confusion over these rules coz they weren't widely advertised and you have to do a bit of digging to find them on their website.

My mate Steve didn't want to go through the whole LAMS thing in NSW...
So he flew up to Brissy on a Friday, i wrote a letter saying he was living with me (i was in brissy at the time), changed his license to a QLD one, did Q-Ride on Saturday, walked back into Qld Transport on Monday morning, got his open license, flew back to Sydney that day, swapped his license back to NSW...
Done...
