Hey guys,

I am really unsure about this one, but few people are telling me otherwise.
If you get issued a speeding ticket in a state which is different to your states licence wtf happens with the points and money ?

My step dad has a QLD licence and was sent a ticket in the mail for an automatic camera that caught him.
1 Point and $80. for only being 12km/h over the limit.

So anyway he paid the fine and checked recently and sitll had not lost any points off his licence? Just the $80

Welcome to Vic - it's a FINE state.

As for points, I think they were trying to standardise (or was that bastardise) the system so fines and points carried across all states. I think Neka got both when he was busted in Vic.

I believe they sorted out the point sharing between states with the introduction of the Australian Road Rules. He should be losing the point off his licence.

Up to 14 kays over is $210 and 1 point in SA. Personally, I feel that if the government was truly serious about speeding, they'd increase the number of points lost and decrease the fine amount. And, reward drivers who don't get caught committing offences by offering discounted rego/insurance etc.

The powers that be are looking at changing the points system in NSW to be similar to what it used to be. It's so easy to lose half your licence for doing 5km over the limit on double Ds weekends.

Like any government is going to reward drivers by offing discount rego/insurance, how else are they going to raise money to fix the roads.

I agree. And I hope they never do :P
I can always earn/save more money to pay a fine (I think of it as a speeding tax to be honest), but once you've used your 12 points, you're SOL!

Then again, the flip side of that is if it becomes stupidly easy to lose a licence, there'll be a lot more unlicenced drivers out there... As per Frank's example, losing half a licence for 5 kms over on a double demerit weekend is ridiculous, IMO, and completely out of proportion to the offence.

yeah it sounds so dam harsh, i mean if yer doing a few km over it dont see it as a huge crime.
In tassie they have there limit set so u have to be doing at least 10km/h over the posted speed limit before u get a fine.

So;
10-14km/h over - $80 and 1 Pt.
15-30km/h over - $110 and 3 pts
31-45km/h over - $180 and 4 pts
+45km/h oer - $300, 4 pts and 3 months instand susp.
I dunno when they decide your going way to fast and lock u up ? i mean if yer gunna do 45, why not do 245 ? mmmmmmm

So IMO i think the penalties here are quite a bit fairer and i guess if u r doing more than 10km/h the limit then u need to get the penalty! but in vic where its like 0.1km/h over the limit = death  or watever it is, i think is wayyyyy to harsh

So, why not just increase the speed limit by 9km/h? You know, 69 instead of 60. 119 instead of 110?
