A terrified mother-of-two has described having a shotgun pulled on her
during a road rage incident on the Hume Highway yesterday.
'Lucy' told Radio 3AW a motorbike rider pointed a gun at her after she
accidentally cut him off on the highway near Cooper Street in Somerton, in
Melbourne's outer north, about 5pm.
The woman said she was driving home with her nine-month-old baby in the car
when the rider of a sports bike began yelling at her after she failed to see
him.
She said the rider pulled in front of her and slammed on his brakes despite
her mouthing apologies at him through the window.
"Still sitting on the bike, he turned around and pointed a double-barrel
shot gun, like a sawn-off double-barrel shotgun at me, and I just froze and
sat there and then he turned my back to me," she said.
Lucy said a small white truck had stopped behind her in the middle lane of
the highway and she drove in front of it to escape the rider.
"I kept looking in my rear vision mirror to see where the bike was and
probably 10 to 15 seconds later he came absolutely flying past me probably
doing about 200kmh up the freeway," she said.
Lucy said she reported the incident to police but she had failed to take
down the bike's registration.
She said she had wondered if seeing the baby had stopped the man from firing
at her and was relieved her eight-year-old - who was not in the car at the
time - had not witnessed the shocking scene.
She said the young male rider was not "a bikie as such" and she believed he
was wearing a T-shirt and helmet and drove a red sports bike.
A police spokeswoman said the road rage threat was being investigated and
appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
Lucy said she hoped the truck driver might be able to provide police with
more details of the man.
