Removing a front sprocket....

Ok, so Im trying to replace the front sprocket on my GSXR600 K1.... and I have the maintenance manual, but it doesnt mention how to replace it... I have taken the middle nut out and removed the thingo around it, leaving me with the big nut.... but the fucker wont come loose, or even budge at all...

Im guessing there is some sort of locking mechanism to stop the nut coming loose.... in the ring around the centre of the nut is an area that I think may be some clever locking thing but I dont know how it works or if it even is a clever locking thing...

Seem like a dumb question? it probably is... and I am sure that someone explains it to me I will feel like slapping my forehead.... any help will be greatly appreciated...

Just fucking tight . Prepare for a massive crack and a slide across the garge floor when it lets go . Enlist some help to help lock up the rear wheel and have it in gear . Rear brake on and a large extension bar on the socket . Put the old Stereo weight on the bar and have band-aids ready .

Be carefel with a sledgie......I had the same problem with Mels ZX6 earlier this year, the biggest extension bar in the shed (1200mm x 20mm gal pipe ) didn't move it.....

The local dealer had to use the blue chisel.....and not once, but fuckin' TWICE.....to get that front sprocket off....

no idea why some people tighten them up this much, its just not necessary....

The rattle gun & compressor is in my shed doing nowt
bring it up here....shake it loose....nip it up enough to get you back home, OR put the new sprocket in your pocket and we'll put it on whilst your here

I've always found a fence post wrapped in cloth fed thru the back wheel and jammed against the swing arm to be mighty useful when removing front sprockets

Enlist some help to help lock up the rear wheel and have it in gear . Rear brake on and a large extension bar on the socket.

IN GEAR is NOT a proper method at all so please do not do this as there is the potential to damage internal tranny parts whilst in the process of cracking the nut loose.

Roll the bike up to and against a suitable wall/fence capable of not letting the bike move forward and you can either hold the brake while sitting on it or place a suitable sized piece of wood wrapped with a towel through the wheel, a bar wrapped to protect parts that won't let the wheel turn and then have your mate with a 2' breaker bar and suitable socket have at it.......that is of course if an impact gun with 60gal compressor isn't handy.

I tried a 250psi rattle gun on Mel's sprocket - all it did was round out a 32mm 6-side socket !!

The only thing that will move this sprocket is heat.

just whack a lump of wood through the rear wheel against the swing arm to stop it moving when ya turn the nut. Then just get some extra leverage on the nut ... then prepare to fall over when it cracks ... like I almost did a coupla weeks ago . .

If there is a washer behind the nut make sure that it is completely flattened out and not touching any of the edges of the nut. i had to go around mine 3 times with a screwdriver and hammer tapping it flat, then the nut came loose straight away, before that (when the washer wasnt quite flat) i bent my extension bar!!!!

As others have stated then put something throught the rear wheel (wrapped ina towel) and just use a long extension bar or piece of pipe and it should just come undone, no need for a rattle gun. (eaisier if you have one though)
