As the title suggests, it looks like i'll be heading down to Phillip Island in October for the Motogp. I was wondering what to do next?
Do you just pick up general admission tickets when you get there or is it best to get reserved seating?
Also, I'd probably stay the night, so is camping it up track side an option? or am i best to look for accommodation in somewhere like Melbourne?

I appreciate anyones thoughts, the questions probably sound a bit straight forward, but I'm just wondering what the best option is.

Well PI is 2.5 hrs from Melbourne so it's better to stay on the island area if not camping.

Ticket is easy, just buy at the gate if you're willling to queue a bit. Don't forget to bring an umbrella, it's PI !

accomodation: there are 2 campgrounds at the track to choose from, others stay there every year and can tell you which is better (or should i say more rowdy)...or you can try your luck at the various caravan parks on the island.

If your going to camp, I would suggest that you book the camp ground pass now as it does sell out.(you need to purchase a general admin ticket to get 1)
That goes for the accommodation around the Island to. Best to book it all in advance now. There is around 10-20
of us camping track-side, so your quite welcome to pitch a tent with us.... you wont get much sleep thou....

So general admission is the go? and is the camping ground closet to turn 1 the more popular choice? also for actually watching the race, where do people watch it from? I remember going to the supers a few years ago and watch from Lugi Heights which wasn't too shabby.

There'll be plenty of us down there so you won't be alone.
Theres a stack of us at Boomerang Caravan park in Cowes, a lot of ppl in houses in Cowes and heaps more trackside.
We will be near turn 1 at the track, with banners and flags, we can't be missed.

Check the 100 days to P.I. post for the map.

Don't forget that there are few places that'll let you have one nights accom. and the track camping is for 3 nights.

Low down - my opinion only

General admission is fine - wouldn't want to pay $$$ for only one view of the track - it's better to roam a bit.

KSRC is generally at the end of pit straight on the entry to turn 1 - it's not too sensible, there will be drinking and you won't get much sleep (unless you're Rossi) Camping at the track is fun, big time - there will be drinking. Easy to get to the track, no chance of drink driving on the way to the track, plenty of KSRC people to mix with. You can only book camping as a block - valid Thur pm to 10am Mon, and in conjunction with entry ticket. Two options, Highside (not bad but you won't get much sleep) & trackside (Wild, you won't get any sleep).

Camping away from the track is also fun, but further to walk to see the bands play - there will be drinking. You will have to make your way to the track, but at least you won't return to find your tent infested with bogans. You probably won't get much sleep here either.

Staying at a house on the island is Hard Core, and ill advised unless you're well prepared. Expect the house to get invaded, drinking in excess is expected, but you do get a soft sissy bed to lay on - you probably won't get any sleep here either

There are options for those who do not drink, but counciling (sp) afterward is highly recommended.

There is no option that allows for a full nights sleep

If you are really lucky you may actually see a MotoGP bike on the track, and on rare occasions you will be sober enough to remember it

I payed for 3 tickets at some huge amount back then $60 ea?, dunno, but we lost the tickets and had to jump the fence anyway after a huge pissup in cowes on GP eve.....

Last time I was there I do not remember anything at all other than to be asked to move my drunken sorry butt after the race so they could clean up all my cans

That was back when Doohan was racing, must have been 90, 91 or 92 I cant remember..
I can remember climbing the cowes pub and shimmying across the front 2nd floor window, a big chested chick flashing her boobs at me through the window and then me getting pelted with half full cans

At least they could have been full, was thirsty work.. then the subsequent dodging of security guards fists when i managed to get back down.
I can remember the riots in the main drag and cars been rolled over, set alight, poor police horses getting pelted, and I also remember getting the hell out of cowes before the law got real nasty about my minor shenanigans (no I didn't vandalise anything or do anything criminal or throw anything)

But yeah, i actually seen one lap of the 250's that was it. Good value I reckon!!
Came home with a Mick Doohan poster that was soaked in beer ripped for all my efforts and a massive hangover

Prolly not to that extreme tho', I try not to drink these days so I might be not much fun other than at scrabble or something as equally exciting

just go, do it, recover and enjoy the experience.

I go to PI every year and get a grand stand, best way to go IMO, during the practice and qualifying I just roam but come race day the grand stands are the best.
Its really hectic trying to get a good spot using general admmision as it becomes so crowded.
Last year I was just sitting there and some little girl walked up to me and handed me a KSRC sticker. Was wearing my kawi team green shirt. Thought that was really cool of you guys

I often wonder what happend to all the ppl we gave stickers too...

That would have been one of Marios kids who gave it to ya..

We give the kids a stack of stickers each and they run around (within site) giving them to anybody wearing green.. Keeps em occupied as there too young to get us beers..
