Over the last week or so I've been conducting research into thermal underwear - apparantley now called "base layer clothing".

As a result of this research I believe that Merino wool thermals are the best suited for motorcycling. After reading numerous reviews (probably somewhere between 60 and 80) and scouring the skiing, hiking and expedition forums I'm now of the opinion that the Icebreaker range of thermal clothing is one of the best manufacturers of Merino thermals in the world.

Many of the reviews I've read have confirmed that they are extremely good at keeping you warm, they remain odour free even after wearing them for days and they are not itchy like the wool products of old.

I have since been in contact with the Australia distributor and I am currently trying to organise a discount for KSRC members. At this stage it is not known if it will be the old "group buy" or if we will organise a decent percentage off from one of their retailers in each state.

So, to help me decide which direction we should move in, I'm wondering who here would be interested in purchasing some of their product at a discounted rate?

I have Icebreaker thermals, and they are definitely among the best you can get. Merino is the best material to use, it is what all the synthetics are trying emulate, but I believe it still manages to have superior properties. If anyone is worried about wool being scratchy, then don't. This stuff is silky.

Just make sure any quotes you get are for the right "weight" material - I was told there were two weights, and I bought the heaviest. Top and Bottoms cost me $210 from a ski shop if that helps your comparison

Yeah, they have 4 or 5 weights in their range now.

The 260 weight gear is good for -10 to +15 degrees
The 200 weight gear is good for +5 to +20 degrees

Then there's some 150 weight gear and some 340 weight stuff (if you're planning an expedition to the South Pole??) and a whole range in between.

Sounds good! I clicked yes but it would depend on the price and where I am in my pay/stupid-amount-of-rides schedule when it's paytime

Just out of interest, what would you consider good enough?

15%?
25%?
40%?
50%?

You don't tend to see this stuff on sale much, so an honest answer as to what you expect would be appreciated.

The 50% would be awesome, would also be very unrealistic, I was thinking 10% and anything above that is a bonus.

A lot of stuff like this at retail level has been marked up by around 50-100%, probably closer to upper end on this stuff. So working backwards, 30-50% would be awesome, and possibly within what the distributor could offer. But that's just an edumacated, guesstimated hypothesis.

If we're doing a buy from the distributor - 25% off retail - what they are actually retailing for, not RRP, would definitely get my attention.

Retailers will move less, and will want to see associated sales to be bothered with it I would think...
