Motorbikes might save time cutting through traffic and be inexpensive to run, but they are deadly machines, with a new report finding riders are 23 times more likely to be killed than people travelling in cars.
Motorbikes account for only 4.5 per cent of vehicle registrations in the country and less than 1 per cent of kilometres travelled.

But motorbike deaths make up almost 15 per cent of road fatalities, according to a new Federal Government report, Fatal And Serious Road Crashes Involving Motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists are also 40 times more likely to suffer serious injury than car occupants.

Last year 240 motorcycle riders were killed and 5000 admitted to hospital.

The report found many of the fatal accidents occurred on weekends and between the hours of 2pm and 6pm, indicating recreational riding, rather than commuting, was linked to the accidents.

Excessive speed and alcohol were the two biggest causes of fatal motorbike accidents and one in 10 involved a rider not wearing a helmet.

"My message to riders is simple: your first accident is likely to be your last so slow down, don't drink and ride, wear a helmet and, in the case of the weekend rider, acknowledge your inexperience and limits with the machine," the Minister for Infrastructure, Anthony Albanese, said.

Since 2002, the number of motorcycles registered on Australian roads has grown an average of 6.8 per cent each year.

As a wise person once said - "There are lies ; damn lies & statistics. " No-one has ever asked me how many km I travel per year !!! If you buy a new bike (in NSW ) there is no rego check for 2 years, so the reference to km travelled is meaningless !!!

Hmmm, in 2006 500 riders died on our roads, in 07 just 240 died and we're making a fuss about the number of deaths. Perhaps someone should be aplauded on the job they are doing providing saftey for motorcyclists.

If 1 in ten are caused by people not wearing a hat - 24 meaningless deaths due to being an idiot.

It doesn't say what percentage were over the drink limit, but also more meanless deaths due to being silly.

As for the speed, well, fish gotta swim, bird gotta eat etc

Freakin' morons! It's my life and if i choose to spend it on the top of a motorbike they should just piss off and let me do so without nagging at me how dangerous it is! I know how dangerous it is....................THATS WHY I LIKE IT!!!!!

do these stats take into account Shifty's dangerous riding without a helmet in the carpark? :p

i hate the way riders are being targeted. I read somewhere else that more people die from lung cancer and smoking caused illnesses than riding a motorbike

if they actually bothed to increase motorcycle riding they would find less dickhead cage steerers on the road to clean us up and this would also drasticaly decrease in our carbon footprint. GO FIGURE

How would they know how many k's are travelled by motor cycles???? they dont even have bikes on the sensis

i for one am a weekend (recreational Rider) i have a 4 1/2 yr old Blackbird and a 4 1/2 yr old van, the van is used every day for work (syd metro, ACT, Nowra) it has 84,000 on it and my bike has 108,000 and i know quite a few like this

think they might ned to go look at the figures again

ive crashed 2 times and i do excessive speeds! Yet i am still here! Infact i am here and quite healthy!
