I know it's "The Shit", my questions are what's it worth? Full or semi synth? Any good for a ZZR600 that's rather long in the tooth? 11 years 120k long :D

don't waste your money on full synth Mick - you could use Valvoline 15W-40 from Supercheap in your rig, it will be fine and save you money.

$35 for 4 litres
$25 for 1000 mineral
its nothing flash, just seems to be the oil most people use

I know there are many threads here on the board, with some many long winded explanations. But Gos, in short why?

The short answer - his bike is pushing 12 years old, and simply doesn't need expensive fully-synth oil. This stuff really only needs to go into later model high-revving sports tackle. Slower-revving older 4-strokes that don't have high-comp motors running *minimum* clearances in critical areas, really only need a decent quality mineral oil of the correct weight, and regular changes (6 months or 10,000km, whichever is first)

Valvoline XLD Premium is the shit mick! It's $18 for 5 litres too :D

Go look at the manual and see the SAE grade. That shit above is classed 'SJ' which is already waaaay above even the 2000 zx6r specs requirements.

Outta curiosity, Gos, could you define "slower revving" for me?

Not looking to start an argument, but a ZZR600 has a 14000 rpm red line, which ain't exactly slow. I'll agree that they won't benefit from full synthetic, but I change my oil at 5k (ZZR600 and ZX9R), which is about when the gear changes start getting clunkier and false neutrals occasionally rear their ugly little heads on the ZZR.

Motul 5100 mmmm i would drink it if i could, bike revs easier and stopped the false neutrals i was getting when i started running it

we're talking about Dundee's bike here ;)

I guess 14k is a reasonably high redline  - semi-synth if you see redline regularly, any big 4-cyl with a redline <10k, then synthetic is a bit of a waste of money .....

I've run Motul 5100 and Motul 5000 in my 02 ZZR6.
For me, the 5000 gives me smoother changes and was half the price. If you're changing every 5000k's it may be worth checking out.
If you're slack and don't change your oil that often, the 5100 lasts longer and you'll be able to get away with the extra k's.

Well i use Motel 8100 in the Supra-Fantasico

but bike i used to run, bit of run in oil to start with then come to time i chucked some super duper shell racing sythetic oil and WOW i notcied the difference, normall oil is oil and i cant really tell the difference. But wow i remeber the first ride with the synthetic in it and it made the bike so smooth!

the way i see it, you might as well pay $10-$20 extra each service on a GOOD oil cause not only do u know its good, and if u can feel the difference then it makes everything smoother and nicer to ride and feels better, but its a cheap insurance cause if u use crap oil + crap fuel althought u will pocket the extra few couple of dollars in the short term, in the long run, u may end up having to pay more to get fuel systems cleaned or engine rebuilt etc etc because of it, not saying thats it, but always good to use the best!

Hmm I've got a false neutral sometimes between fourth and fifth, and it's getting difficult to click from first to neutral at a stand still. Given how long it's gonna take me to do 5000km riding once a week maybe I should go some of this stuff rather than the Penrite HPR Gas I was thinking about.

What about those oil flush things you can get for cars, no good for bikes because of the wet clutch? Just run it until it's warm and drain it then?

And where can you get oil filters from, do Autopro or Super Cheap have them or do you have to go to a bike place?
