hi all, i recently just found my bike on its side, apparently sum1 must hav tried stealing it

ne way it turns out i have a tiny leak at the alternator cover now (as well as a crack on my fairing). i plan on replacing the alternator cover myself, i already ordered an alternator cover for zx2r from the shop, and i was hoping sum1 could giv me a step-by-step guide (for dummies) to replacing the alternator cover?

i've read the manual and its quite brief in explanation... it also mentions adding silicone to the grommet..?

so ne help would b greatly appreciated!

do ya need to drop ur oil on a zx2r?? ..i had to on my blade...

basicly-

drop oil
undo all cover bolts
pull off cover
clean up surface area (razor blade if required)
put on new gasket if required (or use gasket goo)
put new cover on
put bolts back in
allow to dry (if u use gasket goo)
fill with oil (make sure sump bolt in)


should be right to go.. it shouldnt be that hard

its not..as i said, unsure if u will need to dump oil... my cbr was the only bike i had to do this with, and im sure oil gets in there!!

you could always just chock a block of wood under the sidestand to make it stand a little less on the side and then have a go at undoing it. Just make sure you've got a drip tray to catch any spillage

yeah thnx guys i already checked i will need to drain oil b4 i remove the alternator cover

umm it would be messy..as u will lose quite a bit of oil i reckon...

If you find that you need a new gasket, one can be had from Metropolitan Spares for about $10.

SSSSHHHHHHHHHHHhhhh!!!!!!!!

The garage wall is your friend lean the bike up against the wall alternator side up and in gear chock both wheels let it stand this way for about half an hour the oil will drain to the clutch side make sure bike is stable remove cover replace cover and gasket a touch of silicon around the rubber bung for the wires a bit of newspaper or a drip tray to catch the dribbles.
If you have trouble breaking the seal on the cover use a rubber mallet to break the seal UNDER NO circumstances use a screw driver to prise the mating surfaces apart as you will damage the the machined face and possibly cause an oil leak

yea..+1 for the "dont use a screwdriver".... didnt think of that!!

or if you have only a hammer, use a block of wood and hit the engine through that

use softwood not hard wood

finally, replaced my alternator cover successfully using the instructions u all wrote down for me. thnx heaps every1 i really appreciated it, and special thnx to neka who's always the first to reply to my posts

so all thats left.. does ne 1 wanna buy a used alternator cover of me? lols joking. thnx agen all

hehe no worries mate..see i do come in usefull...sometimes...

give ya a hot tip..do u smoke?? things like old alterantor covers or such parts make pretty cool ashtrays or bolt tins sitting in the shed!!...lol (i had a old buckled wheel used as an air line reel!!)
