Mate do you have to get a C model box? A D model box drops straight in, and is stronger, especially in second gear. I think the ratios are slightly different between them though. Output shafts are different but interchangeable as long as you use the correct-for-the-shaft sprocket. (chain and sprocket front sprocket.) Good info on this can be found at

BTW a mate of mine has as-new (done 500km or similar) C model complete pipes for sale. Genuine system- no rust on the headers even! Think he wants a few hundred for them.

thanks Bonester......I think I might have to chase up a GpZ900 box, as apparently the ZZR boxes were based on these ?? I want to use this gearbox in some cases that were originally designed for a 5-sp.....
How much difference is there from the D-model 1100 box to the C ? Is it just the output shaft sprocket and ratios ? The important things I need to consider are bearing and shaft sizes.....
cheers mate

5sp? Must be a GPZ1100 (mid 90s) or ZRX....AFAIK you can stick a D model box in a C. Dunno about the others- GPZ9 etc. I was thinking a few weeks ago (just after I had a ride on a GPZ9 and reminisced) if a ZZR12 engine would fit a 9? I guess it wouldn't but a ZRX might- straight inlet tracts instead of semi-downdraughts....hmmmmmmmmm.

IIRC its just a stronger 2nd gear , hence it fits into the C models

sorry mate, I didn't mean a 5-sp ZZR11.........more like a 5-sp GpZ1100.......circa 1983.....
I have heard whispers of some Pom's fitting a GpZ600R 6-sp into the earlier Z650/Z750 cases, back in the late 80's....nothing is too difficult if you really want it to happen....
thanks for the tips boys, if you hear of anyone out there with a stuffed ZZR11 motor going cheap, keep me in mind.

Hey Gosling,
Have thought about this avenue myself. But decided it was not worth the effort when 1st & 6th on the ZZR box were almost the same as 1st & 5th in the ZRX box. It just add's another gear change to what really is a capable torque laden motor. If I could get a noticebly taller top gear or lower 1st I would consider the change for sure

, but I don't beleive this is the case. But always willing to listen to other peoples experience.
Especially considering I bought a ZRX based on experience on a mates new ZZR 1100 back in 1992

, Fock it WAS
GOOD
. 270 kph, two up, for 20 min stints really opens your eyes, takes away the boredom of western qld roads
