Tires question

Hey guys, quick question....

My bike traditionaly takes
120/70 17 Front
and 180/55 17 Rear

Im about to buy some second hand slicks...

I can get the front in my profile, but not the rear
185/55 17 Dunlop KR106 <---- this is probably the one I want right?
180/64 17 Bridgestone <-----is this even an option?

How will that affect the riding?

From memory the 185 means the tire is wider, and would therefore tip in slower right?

If that is the case, should I be considering a different front tire as well?

(here are my options, I was going to go with the 120/70 pirelli)
120/70 17 Pirelli
120/75 17 Dunlop KR106
125/60 17 Bridgestone
120/60 17 Bridgestone

I am sure there is an economic factor driving this Stereo, however, I would encourage you to source some alternatives. Mismatched used slicks sounds like a mint recipe for a broken collarbone! If you absolutely have to ride on used slicks, then try and buy a matching set. Each tyre will require slightly different set ups to make it all work properly too. I would encourage trying treaded race tyres first. Even these 2nd hand are usually a better option than used slicks.

I think slicks have a different profile to road tyres anyway so you don't want the same size as your road tyres to get the same handling.

How does a slick feel anyway :D ... hope to try someday.

If one can lean so much on road tyre, why use slicks (is it even more lean ?? :D )

There is an economic factor driving this.... I have about 2 weeks before I am going to be running my Gixxer at the track for the first time... Currently I have a 90% worn pilot power on the front and a 20% worn BT020 (yuck!!!) on the back.... and I have almost completely run out of money...

I think the 185/55 17 should go ok with the 120/75 17... Both are Dunlops... But it is not a combination that I have tried obviously.....

Can someone clear something up for me?

I thought slick tyres (all racing tyres for that matter) were only good for a couple of heat cycles and then the rubber went bad.
Which would make almost all used tyres more or less wortheless.

Is this not the case?

These tires were only used one single time.. for a qualifying lap.. Which basically means they went around the track 6 times...

I don't believe Bridgestone make a 180 rear slick.

http://mc.bridgestone.co.jp/en/products ... index.html

Nevertheless, I don't like the 60 series fronts as they don't have the side grip or are as triangular as the 70 series that make it easier to drop into a corner. But this is on zx9's and zxr's so they do need a little help to get into corners.

A lot of the supersports guys use 190 bt002's or similar so 190's should be ok. Just get the same brand front and rear.

Personally, I'd go the Dunlops. They do a Redline (cheaper) slick these days that are OK...
I currently run Pirellis, but they don't last as long as the Dunlops so buying 2nd hand probly not the best value.

and don't be too concerend about 2nd hand slicks, I did most of my track days on em and they were all fine. Some just didn't last long...

There isn't really a bad tyre out there and as far as what suits the bike best, well they all will once you set the bike up to suit them.
Unless your planning on going for the lap record, you'll be fine with just about all of em, get the ones in the best condition.

Don't forget to check compounds too. If one of em was used as a qualifier it may be too soft for a full day at the track. I got caught out with pirrelli sc0 that lasted 2 to 3 sessions before it was stuffed.

BTW, They will all be a damn site better than what you have on it now...
