You see, its all relative

There are more and more people riding bikes every year due to the following:

* Popularity
* Price of Petrol
* Parking of cars cost
* Vespa's are the in thing apparantly (in melbourne)

With the increase of sales of motorcycles/licences

* Majority of cases where a Scooter is involved - Safety gear is hardly ever seen appart from whats required by law
* Every generation seems to get stupider at the moment
* There are way to many people in australia and this is our lord's (yes, greg) way of culling people to ensure we don't go to the next stage of water restrictions.

Unfortunately I think most align being a good rider with being a "fast" rider and put simply that ain't necessarily true. Going "fast" on the road will get you dead one day. This is a culture that unfortunately comes with what we do.

The increasing popularity of bikes and the older bods getting a bike after the kids have grown up etc I think has also added to it. Most of these don't have any training, but think they can ride a bike. They now go and buy something with twice the horsepower and two thirds the weight of the dunger they rode in the 70's and think they'll be good enough to ride it safely.

It's all about training and attitude....and Mabo and the vibe...but mostly the vibe...

It truly is sad

Its horrible to hear and read..
But we all know the risks when we all started.
Just stay alert, anticipate trafic and stay upright ppl.

Yeah Glen...I agree....and not just because it's about the vibe either...although that's also true in my opinion But some people do think being a good rider means being fast. And racing on a track has taught me how far I go if I fall off!! Oddly enough the tyres slow you down and once the bike and you are on the tarmac....they accellerate! Till your leathers or your skin get enough grip on the road surface to start slowing you ...slighty! By this stage, that tree on the outside of the turn becomes your next intimate encounter. Which is why I stick to 7/10ths as a maximum when on the road! I'm not fussed if someones passes me (Unless it's Gos! I'll crack 7.5 for a derby with him ) I just keep at my limit! It's kept me alive for 23 years on two wheels so far! And of course and mostly it's about the vibe!

probably nothing out of the ordinary is happening, just more motorbikes out there, and more km's being travelled by people as a whole... and not much is really being done to decrease the severity and frequency of accidents.

Duane is right - remember, the number of motorcycles sold in Australia has continued to rise and rise, I think over 100,000 were sold last year ?? Its back to the halycon days of the 80's as far as dealers are concerned.

As far as ER is concerned, well they see bike fatalities increase as well.

A couple of years ago, we had 7 or 8 deaths here in the ACT from bikes - it was a huge statistical *blip*, normally there are only 2 or 3.....

Its part of the deal in riding bikes. Full stop. We all know it can be dangerous, there are lots of risks, etc etc. Does this stop you riding ?
