Shaft drive tourer up to $10K. Poll added

Post by Strika »

OK folks throw us some opinions! All are welcome, well founded or not!

I am looking at spending up to 10K on a 2nd hand shaft drive tourer of some description. I want panniers, a top box and a good protective fairing. A GTR1000 is a consideration, although, at this point I am thinking something with a propeller on the badge! Yes yes I know, but they are just about the only ones with decent add ons. Like heated grips and seats and electric screens.

The ones on top of the list at the moment are things like an R1100RT, K1200RS, R1100GS. The R1100RT is my current fave, but will consider anything in this category. Basic must have's are Shaft drive, Panniers, Top box and a decent fairing, so not a cruiser!

what about a HHHooooooon hhhhhhoooon hhhoooo...

ST1100

a friend of my dads had one, it gets quite mobile.

although does not come with a topbox standard. but most are fitted with one.

HD electraglides have all of the above except they have a belt drive, (no maintenence) but, they dont get very mobile.... haha

and goodluck buying one for sub 10K

The GTR. (budget and brand considered)
Id be looking at guzzi's too  but then again
I should keep my wierdo tendancies hidden.

Not much to chose from though.
Japs seemed to drop shaft drive from the
agenda after the 80s.

I reckon an R1100RT would be gettable within that budget, but perhaps with higher k's than ideal. As you mentioned, lots of luxury extras available. Given the parameters, that's what I'd be after.

Actually Smitty, there are a stack of good low to average klm R1100RT's for sale ATM! So budget's not an issue for one of them.

The XJ was a consideration, however I am told spares are a little thin on the ground. While I would like to keep the shed green and GTR's are terrific value, they are very low rent in execution! If it's really friggin cheap I'll consider one.

But as said before top of the list is either a K1200RS, or an R1100RT!

You can pick up an R1100RT ex-police bike from the government auctions here in SA for well under 10 large.

They all have about 100,000 kays on them, but they've been well maintained and are normally still in very good condition.
