Went out to the garage this afternoon to duck out to the shops (sun arvo=bs parking in the car at my local) and went to open the garage door, but it wouldn't open over 1/3 of the way easily.

I go in to take a look, and one of the springs ON THE FREAKING GARAGE DOOR (similar to one of these! ), had pulled its mount off the wall and flicked up and off onto my bike.

Now heres the thing, the metre long 2-3 kilo spring bounced off my tankbag and was WEDGED across my triple clamp and under the bars. Not a mark on the bike, but a slight graze on the tankbag. Had it gone at any other angle, or if i still parked my car in my garage. Fark, i'd hate to think what i'd have to be asking the body corporate/landlord for to fix the tank/fairing/chassis/my car.

As to how it happened, all i can say is *FARK*. i took a look and it turns out that they had done an average job of bolting the retainers into the woodwork, the bolt was only an inch deep if that, and had worked its way out of the wood over time (30y/o apartment complex). I put a new 50mm long bolt in 2 cm above the original mounting, this f*er better stay in.

Then i dropped my helmet getting my bike outta the garage, possibly negating any good fortune i had earned by the original incident .

Lucky you weren't in there when it came loose, that could have been messy !

those suckers sure go off with a bang it costs around $400 to replace one

well took 30 minutes of frickin around to fix it. At one stage i had the garage door propped open with the handle from my hydraulic jack while i fixed the mounting point up. Had to borrow a passing stranger to push the door open while i secured the spring to its hook.

Im just happy there wasnt any damage and the door was fixable (else i'd be bitching to my landlord tomorrow to fix the door so i can get my f*ing bike out (nightshift is better with a bike, Transit lanes *grin*.

Did you check the other side ???

yup, couldnt have gone that way as the spring came from rear left of bike. entire left side was intact and the spring was wedged dead centre under the bars. and yeah, definately taking it as luck over misfortune.

i think he means did u check the other side spring is safe and secure...dont wanna have to go thru this again...

Yup Neka, first thing i did after fixing the left one was checking the rhs one and it was as tight as a nuns proverbial. Either way i've been thinking it might be an idea to reduce the tension on both of them slightly so it doesn't have as such a snappy open to it. Would reduce the risk of something like this happening again..

and ta colette On the bright side at least it didnt occur monday morning when it was pissing wet. I'd have been a very unhappy camper if it did.
