i had a gpx750 for two years, was an awesome bike which i miss from time to time. If anything they are a solid unit, just got to make sure that the top end is looked after as apparently they had a minor hiccup with the camchain tensioner or something.

Main reasons i upgraded were for a wider choice (read more expensive) of road rubber and the better front suspension. Still havent taken michelle on the back, might try an do that this week.

The old GPX 750 is a great rig - Robbie Phillis won the Aussie Superbike title in 1988 on one of these. They were a very good bike in their day..........which was almost 20 years ago..... :? Do you really want a bike that is almost 20 years old ? For only a bit more money, you should try and get a J-model ZXR750 - this was the first update to the ZXR750's that kicked off in 1989. The J's were (and still are) a great bike.

The GpZ900 was one of the most succesful models that KHI ever built. If you do get one of these, go for the later 87/88 models, the one with the 17" front wheel - much better choice of tyres available, and these ones handled better than the early ones.

I'd buy a GPX750 over a GPZ900 any day. Even a late model GPZ900 with a 17" front wheel. The GPX handled better, had a better power to weight ratio, a better chassis, better brakes (marginally), and better suspension...if you call it that.

The J model ZXR750 is actually a bit of a dog. If looking at ZXR's the H is a better bike than a J. Even has more power! They went to odd cams and a mega short stroke on the J, so they had a bit of grunt but ran out of puff after 6000rpm. H's or L's are the go for a ZXR, even though the J's do still look pretty cool!!! Unless you can find one that someone has done the cams and a few other things to it to make it go.

Things to look out for on a GPX. Head gaskets were prone to leak after about 70K. Worn Fork Bushes. Worn Starter clutch. Plastics turning brittle, inlet manifold rubbers perishing. Rusting fuel tanks.

I rode one for over 50,000 k's back in the late 80's early 90's and had an absolute fekcin ball on it. It will do track days, tour and commute. they are good on fuel, have silky smooth motors that love to rev (same motor that was in the early ZXR's! ) with a wickedly good top end. :)
