I hope Mr Daytona was not to seriously injured.
He was the first and last Kawasaki to win the world super bike championship.
In his younger days he was a legendary rider.

A lot of people think was career ending but it wasnt.
He could have ridden again after recovery but instead took an insurance payout which stated he never raced again or payout would have to be repayed.
When i was in the states i saw a program on speed channel called superbikes which is a lifestyle program relating to all areas of sportbikes( stunting, racing, showbikes etc) and in one episode they went to Scott Russells house and showed him doing doing supercross in his backyard and other stuff. I bet he wished he could still race though.

New 'Factor-E' team signs Scott Russell

New founded race team, Factor-E Racing out of Covington GA has signed Hall of Fame inductee Scott Russell (Mr. Daytona) for the 2007 WERA Endurance series. The team was founded by racer Eddie Robinson. Factor-E Racing team will be on board the new R1 from Yamaha for the 2007 season. Be sure to watch for them at the races. For more info check out

From what I heard, he may have found a loophole in the agreement with the Insurance Company. Either that or he decided to pay them back.

And yeah, you're right about that

Going by an interview he gave in Performance Bike magazine. He said, "I'm still faster than most of these AMA guys. Everyone wants to say that, but I know I could still go out there and compete. I can't comeback because I had a disability policy with Lloyds. When they pay out you don't come back. That's the deal. But taking that deal eats at me every day. I quit on the thing I loved, but when you're laying on your hospital bed with your legs split open and tubes hanging out of you..... I made the decision with the information I had at the time and I have to live with it every day"
