While I was away last week I lost my modem to a thunderstorm via the phone line. I didn't bother connecting my phone line surge protector coz that would be too hard and I would have to find another short phone cord amongst all my other crap.

I've only lost one modem previously so I don't consider it a huge risk.
Bought another modem yesterday, dialed up once. Worked well. Didn't bother installing surge protector for above reasons, and you guessed it another storm fried my young modem. Duh!
Think I will install the surge protection on the new modem tomorrow. (on friends puter ATM.)

Been there, except the lightning also fried my motherboard and the ISDN NTU AND set fire to the paddock next door

...

...lucky it was covered by insurance
