I know this shouldnt be here but i must ask as most of you seem to lurk in this forum section the most
i posted a thread in tech part of ksrc as my gpx250r is leaking oil from the air cleaner housing.
i noticed it has done this after a good hard 9,000-11,000 rev ride.
has anyone who owns/owned a gpx250r noticed this issue?
i was on ninja250 website in usa and it seems to be a common issue even with new 2006 models!
http://forums.ninja250.org/viewtopic.ph ... air+filter
this is a link to a guy in usa with same issue.
my bike may have reached speeds of 140-165km/h....well maybe wink wink nudge nudge....dont tell aardvark

oh thanks to strika, gosling1 and mike-s for their ideas as to my problem.

Wow! Didnt know someone else had this problem...
Yes... I had this happen...
In my case, the bike was under "dealer warranty"....
When I noticed it, they thought it was the rings, the replaced them.... No go, issue still occured....
Then over the next 5 months I dropped it back to them 4 more time..... They spent ages diagnosing this problem but were never able to fix it........
In the end, they offered to give me back what I paid for the bike...
From what I understand, it has to do with pressure building up in the clutch.... Because there is nowhere else for the oil to go, eventually it works its way up to the air filter..................

from what i have read you and many 1,000 other owners have it.
most seem tot experiance it after they have taken their bikes above the 9,000 rev range for a extended period of time

maybe the standard oil level is to high ?
over pressureizing and venting out throught the air box

Rocco how old is your bike
the prob can occur fora few reasons
excess oil level is one
excessive crankcase pressure caused by piston blowby generally
there is a crankcase breatherpipe that goes into the airbox as a pollution item
prob is this is hot oily air which isnt good for power and can cause erratic idle when hot
1 solution is to remove the hose from the airbox, plug the airbox hole, and send the crankcase gas into a bottle , any oil collected can be returned to the sump manually

well telephoned kawa and they said i would have to get answers from delaers, they cant help.
so i telephoned some service centres in vic and nsw and pretty much got the same answer all round.
its all about riding habits that causes the issue.
riding a gpx250r above 9,000rpm for an extended period of time will result in oil finding its way up to the air filter box.
the high temps we have had lately also add to the oil becoming more runny and flowing easily out of the airbox.
i was told that the gpx250r wasnt engineered to be ridden at the extremes i was putting it through.
i picked up a large hose and syringe today to suck out a few ml's of oil to reduce the amount as it looks kinda full and i noticed this started from the recent service where it looked like they filled it up way too much.

That sounds like a pretty dud answer if you ask me. If you suspect that it's the crankcase breather pipe, you *could* modify and fit an oil/air separator in line but that may be extreme. Get a compression test (wet/dry) to get the condition of your rings (could be improperly seated or worn)
High temperatures shouldn't really affect the oil temperature except at start-up as during running they are typically much higher than ambient air temperature.

i read about this type of thing in two wheels a few months ago (not an article but oone of the colums) happening to a XR250, all similar probs and possible fixes. it turned out that the guy was running it high speed quite often. i simple change of gearing reduced the rev at 100kph and fixed the problem.
don't know if that helps (?)

it does help and thats the exact reason behind the excess oil in the airbox.
i removed filter pad, cleaned as per book.
i noticed a lot of oil at the base of the sponge filter.
all cleaned up and back on the steed for a test run.
kept it at 9,000rpm for 30mins.
rested and then another 30 mins on 9,000rpm
back to workshop, filter checked and no excess oil absorbed on filter.
the week b4 i went on another ride to which i flogged the ass off the bike.
so two weekends worth of treating the gpx bad has resulted in the issue.
my concern is that it was doing it just around town at 60km/h up the street and back but there was that much oil absorbed in the base of the sponge from all these weekends of bike flogging it had to go somewhere.

That explains it..... I never went anywhere below 9k revs

Gah - there is a difference between 9000rpm and 9000rpm though. If there is an issue with crankcase ventilation, then if you hold the throttle full open at 9000rpm steady (going up a hill for example) - you will probably still find that oil will collect at a pretty high rate in the inlet system, even at lower rpm (5000) you could find the same issue if the throttle is wide open.
If the issue is related to something in the clutch/gearbox the results could simply be rpm dependent. Determine what the issue is and fix it
