I got the bill from team moto today,they did a full set of shims on the 6R for me,

just under $500 for the labour

duz that sound right??

At an average of $60 an hour (about standard - athoght I will probably be corrected ), think how long it takes just to get your fairings off? Ever tried to get in and change the plugs? They're set way down between the double over head cam. Taking the cam cover off is a fairly fiddly job as space is so limited, then remove the cams, measure each of the 16 shims and check against the chart for that valve. Then replace in reverse order. They would probably measure a hold host of other parts according to the manual, each bit taking time at a fair labour rate.

The actual parts cost bugger all - as in the shims - but getting to the little buggers is half a days job. I've had services that cost less and they claimed to have done the shims, but somehow I don't think they we're touched.

A standard shim adjustment and service should be no more than $400-$450 including all parts and labour! If they have charged you $500 in labour, then the apprentice must have done it! A decent techo can have a bike stripped, checked, adjusted and back together in around 4 hours! Some less even.

Most of the dealers charge book rates anyway that way they can cash in if the job took 3 hours they will still charge you 5 hours because thats what the book says.

My bike is due for a big service and they quoted me like 600 including parts which i considered reasonable because its shims,plugs,grease steering head bearings and throttlebody balance and i believe al these things will happen.

Only problem is they wont let me sit and watch and mark the items off the list as they do them and the last service i paid for the mechanic didnt even pull out the air filter and clean it so i pointed out the error of his ways.

I knew the airfilter had been through a bug storm that covered half of victoria and most of nsw.

Also i pulled the airbox off the other day and the last person to do that and yes i know whos apprentice it was didnt tighten the boots to the throttlebody properly.( well at all really)

nah jus under $500 in labour alone.

maybe i should have marked the fairing bolts to be sure somethings been done hey?

Seeing the complexity of the job I would pay $500 if I have the monies

Been lucky having good bike mechanics so far, the only rip off was my car mechanic

I always used to take the fairings off before taking it in for a major service, but if you fancy having a crack at it y'self - for the first time leave at least a day for it ( and 2 days pissing about getting shims) it isn't rocket science but it is a bit fiddly.
If you have patience and attention to detail then do it yourself, the six is very similar to the 9 and I posted a good link to it on another thread but it such a good one here it is again

Is that all 16 have to be checked or all 16 have to be changed,because if it the latter thats bullshit.Most modern bikes these days will do 50,000 kays easily without the valves going out of adjustment.
I think some bikeshops know this and charge for a valve check and dont even touch them,as in dont even bother to check them.
A good way to check is to put a dab of paint on a few valve cover bolts before it goes in and check them when you get it back.

Nope....mechanics are awake to this, and will then do something silly like back off each marked bolt a 1/4 turn to make you think they did it!!! Use an ultraviolet marker!!!!!

Or better still, do it yourself.


Now, as far as shims going out of adjustment.......If you rev your bike hard, it will need shims at every major. If you don't, then they are pretty much OK once they have bedded in from new, till they are well well well used ie 60K+!!!!!

yeah i gotta admit i wasnt to impressed,
bike came back filthy,
some oil leaked out of the gasket and was all over the radiator and headers.
greasy finger marks all ova and it was out in the rain on fri arvo.
no respect.

that or call ur credit card Co (if u paid with it) and report ur card stolen the day before

get a bit of relief out of it...
