Hi all just a quick question is it advisable to get a power commander when i change my exhaust as i was told that otherwise your bike's mixure or tuning goes out of whack [/b][/b][/b]

If your putting on a full system its probly a good idea but if your only adding a slip on I don't think its neceassary. It will certainly help but there a lot of $...

The standard computer is able to handle a slipon just fine..... any mroe and you will need a computer... so yeah, im with stupid on this one

Depends on the bike. From experience and what I've heard from others, the ZX-12R will run like a dog with only a slip on! The computer can't compensate for it, although other bikes can handle a slip on fine.
In your case, I'd just chuck on a slip on and see how the bike behaves. If it doesn't like it, then buy a power commander.

i had sum guy at BP (young guy whos had his R6 for 4 weeks) telling me he REALLY needs a PC3 cos he wants to put a slip-on on...

i advised unless he was doin full zorst & air filter etc, it was probably a waste of time...and since he didnt have the $$ to do it, nor much of a clue on ringing the bike's neck (yet) he might as well wait till he needs it...

Do you own a ZX12 with a slip-on ? I bunged a Yoshi RS-3 on my 12 last year, it runs *absolutely* fine........no other mods (apart from some c/f bits), but whoever told you that 12's run like shit with a can and no PCIII is wrong. A few punters on the site will confirm this

It'll be sweet Matt - as long as there are no other mods.

From my reading of the US forums (where 99% of the 12 owners said 'no worries' for just a can on the 12) , almost exactly the same thing is being said about the 10 as well. If you do add better air filters, then its time to start thinking about the PCIII - the bike will still start and run well, but a PCIII will harness the extra HP that comes with better breathing.

If/when a full aftermarket system goes on, then a PCIII is *basically* mandatory, according to all the advice on the various forums out there...

(of course, if you are really chasing *every* HP, then a PCIII with just a slip-on is a good idea..........a couple of extra HP isn't a big issue with a 12... )

for what its worth, what ive learnt (here mostly) and what i kno...i agree...

PC's can help smooth out flat spots and increase power..power increse on a 10 isnt that important for road use (already has more than enuf to do ur ticket) BUT it can make power more linear....

Yep I do. I bought my bike with only a scorpion slip on. It ran like shit!!! Flat out it was fine but cruising around town I had to keep the revs over 3.5K to avoid riding where it's rough, although it did have a cool offbeat type sound. Even if you slowly opened the throttle in neutral it was lumpy as hell till after the 3.5k mark. And it would backfire on decel.
Hence I know they can run like shit with just a can and no PC3!
I after reading a few forums I found out that a lot of people had the same problem. I ended up buying a PC3 (from the U.S), problem fixed.

It might only be a problem on the early 12s as there were some changes to the ECU later on.

What year is your bike? Mine's 2000 (see signature).

I run a 2005, and there have been some changes to the ECU - I think the US guys also mentioned that the KLEEN system was a bitch for backfires/popping on the overrun etc, as well as generally poor running down low, when the stock can was removed for a better-breathing one in the early (2000-2002) models.

The common mod was to by-pass the KLEEN system altogether on the early models, but a number of punters in Oz have warned me off mods to the system on my 05 model, it runs fine with just a can, and no mods to KLEEN. Perfect off-idle, strong down low and screams up top ..... Gotta be happy with that

Best thing about a full zorst system replacement is the weight loss those Ti systems can cut kilos off the weight.

Yeah I turfed the Kleen from my bike straight away, made it better but still didn't run that great till I put in the PC3. The slip on I have on mine is titanium, later on down the track I'll be replacing the rest of the system.
The midrange could be a bit stronger, I'm hoping a proper dyno tune will solve that.
