Motorcycling fears !!

Well i have been thinking for the past week cause recently a person i know wat t-boned by a car and is not in a good way and his $12k so called investment has now become an $8k repair job! means his R6 would b oweing him $20k. He wasn't insured which is a lesson learnt.
Not only that the accident was very bad and he is all busted up.

Anyway this gets me back my main point. I have insurance on my bike which is $3.5k (due to my age)
I use a motor cycle as my only form of transport which at times can be a pain in the arse esp, when it rains. Also the hassle of having to put all my gear on then lug it around places with me.
I am also paranoid because it is a NEW bike of dropping it etc. Plus also having it stolen.
I am thinking i might sell wat i have now, get a car, then down the track (6 months - 1 year) buy another Ninja!

Any thoughts ??

I was having this chat on the phone to Froggy this morning. We have a 6 car garage that is full right now and my bike is in the very back covered and has shit all around it. After Froggy's off then Gav's and loosing 2 brother in laws in bike crashes I feel the very same way. I have a cage so I would just be selling the bike and perhaps popping the money aside for the next if the next comes along. A wise man told me if it doesn't feel right don't ride. :) GoodLuck

Isn't that one of the things people were warning you about *before* you bought the 636?
I use a motor cycle as my only form of transport which at times can be a pain in the arse esp, when it rains. Also the hassle of having to put all my gear on then lug it around places with me.
And this has only become an issue now, with the 636, instead of back when you had a 250? Why?

Being no longer brand new, your bike's now worth 11 grand, tops. If you sell it, between the depreciation and the portion of your insurance premium which won't be refunded when you cancel the policy, the couple of weeks you've spent with it will have cost you some $4000.
Any thoughts ??
Yes... now you see why you should listen the next time grownups talk.

Beyond that, hang on to the 636 for now and grit your teeth. To do otherwise would be taking too big a financial hit... if anything, cancel your comp insurance policy, take out third party proprty instead, buy your runabout car with the refund from the insurance company, and when you're out on the bike, ride it like you don't have comp insurance; at more than *a*third* of the value of the bike once you add the excess to the premium, that policy is *not* value for money.

No i am not trying to make out as if u guys where wrong at all, or its nothing something along the lines of 'I told u so' i have taken all those things into consideration. But its really the fact that my mate has been badly injured and i spose just slowly over time.I still love biking but there are just moments when i can't be farked!

Plus if i get a car, i feel like one or the other will get neglected

Nick, it is a lot simpler to live your life dealing with what "is" rather than wasting a lot of nervous energy on what "might be"...that said, if you are not enjoying your new bike then maybe it is time to reconsider?

Try not to make any snap decisions though, if you can.

I wouldn't be selling the bike and buying a car if the loss is in the vacinity of $4k...

Save $2k and buy a beat up old commodore (for example) and use it to drive to work on rainy days...

Yeah i was thinking the same thing.Look everytime you go out on yer bike something could happen, but if i thought that everytime i went out, then ide prolly ditch the bike. You can live your life wrapped in cotton wool or you can just go out there and live life.
As a good friend of mine always says,"Life is not a spectator sport".

Had a close workmate call me yesterday to inform that her partner died over night.........he was 34, fit and healthy and went to the gym 3 times a week. He had a heart attack and was dead with in 12 minutes.

What I guess I am trying to say is live in the now. If the bike is "too much" for you but you love riding as much as you say then get something less agressive. If its the what if's in your head everytime you ride, bear the above in mind.

When your time is up, your time is up!

Saki, riding a motorcycle is dangerous! Yep that's right! I am awfully sorry we didn't inform you of this Prior to your entry into the world of two wheels!

Saki, really quite sorry to hear of your mate who is injured. May they recover well, however, If they were T-boned, surely the other driver is at fault and should pay?

It knocks you around when your friends get injured. It knocks you around worse when you get injured!! But as a motorcyclist, it's something you have to accept the risks of, or just not do it! Just wait till one of your friends dies on a bike!!!!! Then you will really know about it!! I have had quite afew mates not make it over the years. Now when it happens, all those thoughts still go through your head on if you should or shouldn't ride anymore. After death 2 or 3, you just start to accept and deal with it, and put it in the back of your mind when on the bike. The less stuff clouding your judgement the more your mind is able to focus on the important stuff, like throttle, brakes, etc etc.,!

In the end, time hopefully will settle your nerves again, and the passion and desire to ride, will overcome the fear!

If not let me know, I could do with a cheap track bike!

Saki if that is how you are thinking i would suggest a car just don't sell the bike first up. As Red_Dave said get a cheap run around (i sold my VL wagon good cond. 8mths rego for $900), and keep the bike for week-end runs or when you get the urge. The last thing you would want is the $4k loss and have the poos about this stupid idea of selling the bike. But from the sound of it, you should be driving.

But if you do decide to sell, how many kms has it done. I wouldn't mind a newish bike over a new one

i do want to keep the bike cause i think its an awesome piece of machinery! its not that i feel like i can't handle it, but its other knobs on the road which concern me.
I know there are risks and i know people get hurt and even worse from biking. And i accept that risk, thats why i ride, but i often wonder is the thrill of riding worth the risk.
Its not like i jump on the bike and think "SHIT i am going to die" but i just don't want to end up like my mate! but i spose no one does. I spose not riding would take that risk away, but being cautious also lowers the risk
