Anyone tried them? I tried all sorts of mikes including noise cancelling and throat mics (sound like downs syndrome and unintelligible) on my Unidens to no avail. These Aldi ones say that they have VOX- wonder how they cope with wind noise. BTW anyone else try the $30 dick smith wired rider/pillion communicator? Works....only up to 60km/h. Useless otherwise!

You may need to wrap some cotton wool or something around the mike to protect it from wind noise...

Review of aldi bike to bike comms.

G'day everyone,
First post here.

Hope this helps..
I bought one of these exact units off ebay for the same price a little while ago. (sold under different name but exactly the same)
They are fairly good for the price considering how much the proper set ups cost with noise cancelling mics etc.

The radio's are very cheap and the quality shows it compared to the unidens etc but I have tested this radio against a 1W uniden handheld and the range on both send and receive is exactly the same on both radios so no complaints there.
Range for both in suburban areas was between 500m and up to about 1.5km. This is through trees, houses and small hills. Out on the open road they are a bit better. They can pick up the trucks that have 5W radios and large antena's from further away but from one of these to the other the range isn't too crash hot. Still good enough to ask cars coming the other way how far away was the last servo they passed. (and then to ask couriers if they can stop and give you a ride to the servo after the bike decides thats too far for it to go on empty as I found out the other week :( )

VOX is totally useless. No matter what sensitivity it is set at engine noise sets it off in the lower gears above 4 or 5grand. (micron exhaust on a Z1000) and wind noise (helmet noise) sets it off from between 50 and 65km/h with a full face helmet. This is the same for the uniden though and just about anything else apart from the autocoms I believe.
Fully fared touring bikes might have slightly better luck.
Using the PTT (push to talk) switch is far better and seems to work well with gloves on.

The speakers and mic take a bit of fiddling with to get the right positions but I can hear clearly up to 100km/h and not so clearly to a maximum of 120km/h which is pretty good for a naked bike i think.
I found using ear plugs to cut down some wind noise then turing the radio up more to be the best. The volume would have to be painfully loud and probably cause hearing damage if I was to try and get it loud enough to overcome the helmet wind noise over 120 though.
(being a law abiding citizen I stay to the speed limits all the time anyway  )
People could understand what I was saying at 90-100km/h. I didn't get a chance to test above that but I probably wouldn't have heard much of thier reply due to wind noise.
The mics they supply with these kits are actually designed for an open face helmet and can be a bit of a squeeze to get the base of the boom mic under the cheek pad.

I find my unit to be handy for long trips especially when I'm on my own but I don't use it at all when crusing around town or riding with my mates as they don't have the intercoms. I think it would handy to have if other people on the ride were using one as well.

If anyone wants to know more about it just ask. I think I've covered most of it though.

Cheers,
Brent.

Dumb question:

Can you hook 2 mics/headsets into the one unit? This would be ideal and nice and cheap for trips with the gf (and she wouldn't have to communicate to me by kidney punches to let me know I'm going too fast)

HAHA The kidneys are just warning punches. It's when I pull over that the assault starts - I'm sure we all know the drill.
