Insurance Question

Well, after my posts in the other thread abotu insurance, I'm curious to see what peoples thoughts are.

At the moment I drive an 89 'VN Commodore. Lowered, repainted, wheels exhaust, interior work, yadda yadda yadda. Car would be worth 3k if I was to sell it.

Currently insured with RACQ for CTP Fire/Theft for $240ish a year.

Due to my second licence loss, they will not be renewing my policy come Oct this year.

Have rung around a few places, and found a place that does:
CTP Fire/Theft: 444$/year
Comprehensive: 600$/year

Now I've never had an at fault accident in my life, but just curious as to what people would do. Is it worth paying the extra and getting comprehensive, even though the car isn't worth that much?

I never had comprehensive until I bought a new car. Mostly my cars were worth more to me than anyone else...

It depends a bit on your situation. You aren't paying an awful lot more for full comp, but then add that to your excess and how close to $3k is that? I always worked on the principle that if I had to write off a car, I could just go out and buy something "functional" for around $2k - as long as it moved and had RWC. So I always stuck with TPFT.

Obviously once the value of the car goes up, insurance makes a lot more sense. In fact, Mrs Felix hit a rock in her car that ripped the gearbox sump plug out. Gearbox ended up nicely cooked and a whole complete one had to be shipped in from France - it would have cost us $4.5k except the NRMA insurance picked up the tab minus a $350 excess :D

Worth taking into account the friggin hassle it is if someone knocks the car off. I own a 1985 Laser and it's not worth shit but still had it knocked off once, is a pain in the arse...

All our cars and bikes are issured.
We weigh up what insurance each item gets on price and can we afford not to have it.

Bikes full comp
Communter bike for work 3rd party worth maybe 3-4k
My car full comp
Hubbys work just incase weather is bad 3rd party VP maybe 2-3k

We can live with out the 3rd party bike and car as we have other to use.

If it's your only car/bike i think you need one or you need savings to buy another one as once is stuffed it's stuffed.
