So i did my first stoppie today..

Post by Benny »

Riding to work this morning as i do..

Nice black minivan in the left hand bus lane infront of me, out of nowhere she decides she is afraid a car is going to pull into her lane from the right, and slams on her brakes. And it was no little slam, it was a slama-jama from hell. So i hit the anchors, and before i know it i do my first stoppie!!

Right after i realise my rear wheel is heading skyward and me with it, i get thrown over the bars landing half on the sidewalk half in the gutter. God damn it!.

Cracked my rear plastic next to the pillion seat, completely shattered my sump casing. An a a bit of cosmetic damage to the bar ends, headlight cowling and both sets of pegs on the left side an snapped my lever. My tank didnt get any damage thank god. Waiting for the docs report on the bike (repair quote). Im hopeing its less than what my excess is on my insurance.

The lady infront stopped to help me, but didnt take any responsibility, if her kids werent there i would have been tempted to give her a mouthful. She gave me her details an said she would help me pay for the bike-tow guy. She didnt say anything about bike repairs,I guess its better than doing a runner on me. And i was sure to be following a decent distance and i believe we were only doing 40 also because of heavy traffic. Clearly she shouldnt have hit the anchors so hard, she knows it, wonder if i can make her pay half atleast?

No injuries to me really, i think i re-broke my collarbone that was almost healed from snowboarding incident. Amazingly my snowboarding pants that i wear on real cold days didnt rip, and saved me from any road rash on my legs.

Only suffering from a broken heart seeing my bike bleeding everywhere

bad luck buddy, you were stuffed from the start.

If you didnt brake hard enough, you woulda run up her arse and it would be your fault.

You didnt hit her, you fell off, your fault

She wont be held responsible for anything.

apart from that, you're ok, and you've got insurance.

Unfortunately, if you run into their car from behind, it's your fault (99.9% of the time)

Sorry to hear that..as a daily commuter through Sydney traffic as well, I can completely understand how that could happen

Hope your repairs get covered by her insurance and your injuries heal quickly.

Consult your insurer. There is some sort of clause regarding deliberately reducing your braking distance - but it would be your word against hers. Still, it's worth giving them an anonymous call to find out.

Sorry to read about your accident Benny, and really sorry about the damage to the bike! Best of luck in getting some loot out of her.
Cheers,
Anne

I've neva heard of, nor seen such a clause.

If he was travelling at a correct/safe distance behind the vehicle, he would have had
sufficient time to stop w/out any major dramas whether driver slammed on brakes or not.

Cars stop kwicker than bikes. Must keep that in mind & ride accordingly.

Good luck Ben

Duane and Kishy are right
As far as the law is concerned if your run up someones ars (no matter what) you were OBVIOUSLY too close
Pretty hard to argue against

But it is a lesson to us all about reaction times eh?
Just because you CAN ride, doesn't mean you SHOULD

problem is in Sydney traffic if you leave any sort of decent gap between you an the car infront, someone WILL pull into that gap. And you would find yourself being continually pulled out on without indicators. Drivers in sydney are like rugby players, they see a gap an hit it at full speed and hope they dont collect the other players on teh road.

I hate sydney for this reason, thats why im moving to cairns in 2 months 8) .. an cheers for the well wishes.

I will get a phonecall with my repair quote any minute now.. in a couple of hours.
